Dog Sports that Rottweilers Can Participate In
- Agility - Agility has become very popular in the past decade. It originated in Europe. Agility courses have jumps, tunnels, see-saws, a cat walk, tire jumps, long jumps, and more. After the dogs learn what they are doing, they have a blast running through the course. It's a great exercise program for you and your dog!

- Tracking - In tracking, the dog has to follow a 'track' laid by a person. In the beginning levels the track is several hundred yards long with just a few right-angle turns. In the more advanced levels, the track becomes much longer, with more turns, the track even goes across roads, and creeks, and varies from long grass, short grass, corn fields, dirt patches, and more.
Contact the AKC for more information on tracking.

- Carting/Drafting/Driving - This is a sport Rotts can succeed at - this is what they were bred for, to pull! Carting is where a dog pulls a cart with or without a person in the cart. Drafting is where a dog pulls a cart without a passenger. Driving is where the person that is giving the dog commands is riding in the cart. Rotts excell at this!
- Flyball - Flyball is lots of fun! There are at least 2 teams each consisting of 4 dogs. On go, one dog from each team leaps over 4 hurdles, each set 10 feet apart, then steps on a lever to trigger a release of a tennis ball. They must get the ball and then leap back over the hurdles. Then the next dog leaps over the jumps, etc. The first team to successfully get all of their dogs over the jumps and come back with a tennis ball, with the least mistakes, is the winner.

This Rottweiler loves flyball!

- Herding - When you think of cattle or sheep being herded, you probably see a Border Collie, or a German Shepherd. Among the some 30 breeds that are designated as dogs that herd, Rottweilers are among them.

- Frisbee - Maybe you just want to be able to play frisbee with your dog out in the back yard. Or maybe you’re real serious with the sport and want to compete. Frisbee is fun either way. All you really need is a dog that knows how to retrieve and jump and a frisbee. There are lots of places to learn about how to get started (books, web sites, and there are even some frisbee clubs)

- Obedience - There are 3 levels of obedience in AKC obedience trials. Novice, Open, and Utility. Novice is the easiest and consists of most basic commands like, heel, stand, stay, come, and down. Open gets harder when your dog has to drop down on a recall and retrieve over a jump. As you can expect, Utility work is even harder. More work with jumps and scent discrimination.

- My Dog Can Do That - This is a board game that you play with your dog. As you move along the board, you pick up cards. On each card there is a trick you and your dog must perform together. The whole thing sounds sort of silly, but animal shelters and training clubs are starting to hold MDCDT competitions as fundraisers.
This game can be purchased at some pet stores. J and J Dog Supplies sells it, phone: 800-642-2050
