The Descendents Of Henry & Mary Kays Noel
NOEL
MARY 1807 - 1889
HENRY 1811 - 1894
Henry & Mary Noel's graves are located in the village of Adel, near Freedom, in Owen Co., Indiana, along with several other Noel relatives. The tombstones are sorely in need of cleaning, which is another project I have planned on a future trip to Indiana. Some inscriptions are starting to be illegible, while other graves are simply marked with rocks or the last name "Noel".
Henry Noel was born in 1811, in Kentucky, and married Mary Polly Kays, on April 8, 1832 in Garrard, KY. Mary Polly was born in Garrard Co., Ky, in 1807, the daughter of George Kays and Mary Polly Huffman. In 1847, Henry sold his Washington Co., KY land to William Kendall, and moved to Owen Co., Indiana, to the farm of James Vandeventer, his son-in-law - husband of daughter, Elizabeth Jane Noel. Mary died September 8, 1889, and Henry married a second time on May 4, 1890, to Mary Fox, in Owen Co., Indiana. Henry died August 22, 1894. Henry and Mary are buried in the village of Adel, in Owen Co., Indiana, in Adel Cemetery, formerly known as Troy Cemetery. Adel was established in 1859 - originally called Pleasant Valley.

Five of Henry's sons were in the Civil War.  Two of them, William and John, both died during that War.  The other boys came home broken down and in not very good health.

Obituary of Henry Noel
(sent to me from Nancy J. Skinner White):

Mr. Henry Noel, one of the old pioneers of Clay Township, departed this life last Wednesday week at his home near Adel after a lingering illness of 18 months duration, at the ripe old age of 83 years.

Deceased was born in Kentucky in 1811, married to Mary Keys in 1832.  To them
was born eight children, three being still living, Isaac Noel, county recorder, James M. and
Mrs. Eliza Ooley.  Mrs. Noel died in 1889 and in 1890 he married Susan Fox who survives him.  He moved to Owen County in 1857.

He was a member of the Christian Church at Adel and was loved by all who knew
him.  He was endowed with a powerful mind, which he always experted for the good oh humanity.  He loved right and despised wrong and his life was a consistent one, his death peaceful.  All know that death was an acceptable change to him.  Your scribe never had a warmer friend in the work that Uncle Henry, as he was familiarly called, and we are sad to have to give him up.  His remains were interred in the Adel Cemetery the day following his death.

The following information is from the book
"Indiana Place Names", published in 1975 by the
Indiana University Press:  Pleasant Valley is also Adel, or even "Dog Walk", on the border of Franklin and Clay townships -  but in Clay County.  This story appeared in
The Evening World newspaper, June 4, l974, called "Scenic Clay Township" by Dixie Kline:

Pleasant Valley, platted in l859 by Levi Carpenter, is one of those places I call "vernacular neighborhoods"...whatever was there and to be known as Pleasant Valley burned...of course we still know Adel but Dog Walk has gone the way of Red Haven and other crossroad communities that have dropped out of common knowledge.
