"THE SIX GENERATIONS OF FLEET BALLISTIC MISSILES"
This display at the Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic (SWFLANT) is a tribute to the thousands of individuals who have served on the government/contractor team since the mid 1950's. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in ending the cold war and making the world a safer place.
The five generations of missiles in the back row (from left to right, Polaris A-1, Polaris A-2, Polaris A-3, Poseidon C-3, and Trident I C-4) were transferred from the former Polaris Missile Facility, Atlantic (POMFLANT), Charleston, SC after its mission was complete. POMFLANT assembled and delivered all five generations to the fleet from 1960 to 1993. POMFLANT was instrumental in the establishment of the Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic (SWFLANT), Kings Bay, Georgia and its companion facility Strategic Weapons Facility, Pacific (SWFPAC), Bangor, Washington.
TRIDENT II(D-5)
In October 1981, the Secretary of Defense directed the Navy to fund an advance development program for the TRIDENT II (D-5) missile with a late 1989 initial operation capability. Primary among the performance objectives were improved accuracy and increased payload. In March 1983, Director, Strategic Systems Projects (later Strategic Systems Programs), proposed that the Strategic Weapons Facility, Atlantic be established at Kings Bay, Georgia, to support the TRIDENT II program. The six year TRIDENT II development program met all performance requirements under the original budget estimates. With the outload of 24 tatctical D-5 missiles on board the USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) in March 1990, the Navy and the Nation entered the sixth generation of the Fleet Ballistic Missile Program.
