    1. Cut 1x6 board into the following lengths:
      1 at 24"
      2 at 5 1/2"
      2 at 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
      1 at 7"

    2. Cut the 24" piece to your desired shape. This will serve as the base.

    3. Use a rounter and rout a bead or cove along the edge of the base and the 2 pieces 5 1/2" x 5 1/2".

    4. Finish sand, stain, and varnish to your preference (all pieces except the 7" piece).

    5. Carefully nail the 5 1/2" pieces to the 2 1/2" pieces and then to the base as per illustration.

    6. Use a saber saw or jig saw to cut the shield shape into the 7" piece. Sand and paint the coat-of-arms on both sides of the shield. Drill a 1/4" diameter hole approximately 2" deep into the bottom point of the shield.

    7. Drill 1/4" hole in the center of the base. Grind a 7/8" spade bit so that it has a 1/16" taper (see illustration). Drill a candle hole in the center of each 5 1/2" square approximately 1 1/2" deep.
