Crusader's Cross

During your Quest you acquired a piece of wood 3/4 of an inch by 3/4 of an inch by 10 inches. You are to make a Crusader's Cross from this piece of wood. After fashioning the cross as per the instructions below, you may carve, stain, and finish the cross to your liking. The shape of the cross can be modified to represent any cross design including that of your crusader order. A leather thong or chain can be used to suspend your cross around your neck or from your belt. Place any Quest beads upon your thong as a reminder of your Quest.

Constructing the Cross

    1. Sand your 10 inch piece of wood.

    2. Cut your 10 inch piece of wood into two pieces, one 6 inch and the other 4 inches.

    3. Lay the 4 inch piece across the 6 inch piece about 1 and 5/8 inches from the top.

    4. Scribe the width of the cross piece onto the upright with a sharp knife.

    5. Scribe the width of the upright with a sharp knife onto the cross piece so that the cross piece will be centered on the upright.

    6. Saw half way through the wood on the inside of each scribe mark on both the upright and the cross piece with a fine saw such as a hack saw.

    7. Chip out the inside area with a knife or chisel.

    8. Overlay the cross piece onto the upright. Make minor fitting adjustments with a sharp knife. The fit should be tight.

    9. Place glue into cut out area and press cross together.

    10. Carve and finish cross to your liking.

    11. Attach thong and beads.
