A Shield and
Banner Tree

1. Cut two lengths 1/2" emt pipe to 78". Use the file to remove the sharp burr created by the cut.

2. Cut the 3/4" emt pipe to 72" and deburr.

3. Each pipe gets a certain number and size of hole drill in it. According to the layout shown.

    Pipe #1 (78" X 1/2" emt)
Drill two 1/4" Holes, hole one six inches from the top, hole two 30" from top.

    Pipe #2 (78" X 1/2" emt)
Drill two holes, hole one six inches from the top, hole two 30" from top.

    Pipe #3 (72" X 3/4" emt)
Drill two 5/16" holes, one hole 3/4" from the top, and the other 24" from top.

Pipe #4 (Pipe 4 is 1/2" emt. It will be used as the flag pole. This can be as short as 78" or as long as 120".)
Drill 1 hole 5/16" diameter 41" from the bottom. Drill another 5/16" hole 20" from bottom
3. Assembly of the Stand
Insert 4" eyebolts into 30" hole on pipes 1 and 2. Tighten securely using 1/4" nut. Tighten a cap nut on the end of each bolt. Join pipes together with the 1½” bolt using cap nut. It should be somewhat of a loose fit. Gently tap top end of the 3/4" emt pipe to make it an oval shape. A 1/2" emt pipe must slide easily inside of it. Place the 1" flathead stove bolt into the top hole in the 3/4" emt. Feed the bolt through the inside. (If necessary, work the hole a little to get the bolt in.) File sides of the head if necessary to gain clearance for the 1/2" emt to slide in the 3/4" emt pipe. Attach pipe 3 to pipe 2 with the 1" stove bolt and tighten down cap nut. Again it should be a loose fit.

4. Setup
When bolted together you should have a tripod with the threaded end of two eyebolts projecting. Attach flag to pipe 4 and slide pipe into pipe 3. Unfold the tripod. Adjust the stance of the legs 1 and 2 so that your shield rest on the threaded portions of eyebolts. Set stand legs to your preference. Slide pipe 4 up so base of pipe clears lower hole on pipe 4. Insert remaining eyebolt through the hole in pipe 3 and spin wing nut onto it. Allow pipe 4 to slide down and rest on the eyebolt. Use rope to tie the three eyebolts together so that the legs don't kick out. Your shield holder is now complete. To pack up, remove wing nut and allow pipe 4 to slide into pipe 3. Align holes in pipes 3 and 4 insert eyebolt and wing nut.
