The Tailor’s Example

There are two great examples in scripture of those who sew. The first is that of a woman named Dorcas or Tabitha. This woman not only sewed fine clothing, but she donated her services to the poor and needy. A sudden illness resulted in her death. When Peter was brought into her home her friends were crying and showed Peter all the fine garments she had sewn for the poor. Peter went into her room and prayed for her. God restored her to life and we can confidently say that she resumed her ministry.

Our second example is that of Paul the Apostle. Not only was he a learned man having been educated under Gamaliel, but he had a trade or skill that he was trained in. Paul for all his eloquence was a tent maker. A tent maker was a valued profession in Paul’s day. Many nomadic people lived in tents. Soldiers of the Roman Army used tents also. In almost every city Paul traveled to he would pay his expenses by working as a tent maker. The Greek word for “tent maker” is also used for a person who works with leather. The awl, heavy needle, and various tools used for making tents were also suited for leather craft. Paul is an ideal example of a man committed to service to God, and committed to earning his way with his trade.
