Family Tree
Sampson Stuart McNeill Family
Sampson Stuart McNeill is the
progenitor of many McNeills in the USA. He was born in Belfast, Ireland,
in 1776, and arrived in Virginia with his brother John in 1792. Presumably,
Sampson and John were looking for a better life in America with the impending
outbreak of the Irish
Rebellion of 1798.
Like many 17th Century immigrants
from Europe, Sampson soon moved from the Eastern seaboard, choosing to
establish roots in the frontier…what today is the Ohio Valley.
 |
The Iroquois
called the river "Ohio" and the name was later translated by the French
as "the Beautiful---La Belle Riviere." Not a beautiful river, mind
you, but the beautiful, with no fear that it might be confused with
any other." |

D.C. It was an important seaport, especially for the export of Virginia
tobacco. |
Sampson and Lavina had 12 children.
Five of the children were born in Virginia. Sometime between the summer
of 1817 and 1819, the family moved from Virginia to Chilo in Clermont

on flatboats down
the Ohio River.
