The Might Orbots Returned Who woulda thought. During the '80s, robots and Japanese animation ruled; 'The Transformers' dominated afternoon TV, 'Robotech' and 'Starblazers' were everywhere, and we still tolerated C3PO and R2D2. But something weird happened to 'Might Orbots.' It was on Saturday mornings, on nation-wide tv, drowning in anime influence, transforming robots and giant monsters... and it lasted just over a season. Such is life with kids programing. Nonetheless, there are tons of fans who still remember the adventures of Rob Simmons and his bumbling band of robots.(As you've guessed, I'm a HUGE fan, especially since I've fanned about this cartoon TWICE; once as a missing toy line, then as a great animated mech.) So what could we create to placate the Orbots fans out there? A combiner, of course. Let's start with something approximately 10" tall; not too tiny, so we can have details on all five robots, but not so large that it won't fit on your shelf.(And keeps this thing reasonably affordable.) Believe it or not, let's get away from die-cast for this and go with plastic. Please, please, this sounds like sacrilege, but let's keep the weight down, and you get better sculpting detail on plastic. The transformaiton and sculpt will be along the lines of Beast Machines; tons o' detail, lots of articulation, and solid transformations from Orbot mode to MO mode. One added touch is Bort has some other transformations, besides Orbot mode and MO's leg. In the show, he's appeared as a plane, energy converter, and created weapons for MO, such as bolos and a giant sledge hammer. We'll add these additional weapons as accessories to MO. Naturally, you need to have Rob, Ono, and the beam-car. These should be scaled so that Rob and Ono fit into the beam car. Then we'll create a chamber in Tor's chest so that when all the Orbots are transformed, the beam-car with Rob and Ono will fit into MO itself. Something a bit smaller then Micro-Machine sized should work well. Ok, start doing the theme music, and let the nostalgia begin.... |
