Ah, one of THE best villains created for the Man of Steel for me. Yes, Lex Luthor is a great villain for Supes since he's the antithesis of Superman; an intellectual giant to Kal-El's physical might. Doomsday is Superman's physical equal. But Mongul, he's BOTH; strength comparable to Superman's with the a devious, evil mind.(And at over 8' tall and who knows how many TONS, Mongus is very phyiscally imposing.) For some reason, though, no one ever made a Mongul figure. Hasbro created a pretty decent, hulking Metallo figure, a Luthor figure with a very odd hornet-drone-powered-armor thing, but no Mongul. :-P So what are we gonna do about it?
Ok, first off, we're looking at about... an 8" figure, minimum to go with a 5" Supes figure. A good scale is actually the Darkseid figure from 'Total Justice;' large, bulky, oozing power and intimidation. Of course, ARTICULATION, ARTICULATION, ARTICULATION. No, we don't need 22 points of it, this guy isn't supposed to be Spider-Man. We'll settle for knee and elbow joints as well as the usual hip and shoulder joints.
Accessories? When Mongul was first introduced in the 80's, he didn't really have much, beyond this rather bizarre cube that was a super-powerful force-field that could shrink people. Ok, ok, so this is a rip-off from Galactus. Hey, all's fair in love, war, and comics. Although having no accessories is appropriate for a character this powerful... it's also BORING. Fortunately, when Mongul was re-introduced in the 'Exile' story-arc lowe many years ago, he was given a few extras to mess with, so let's throw those in. First, he appears in a ceremonial cloak during some gladitorial games, so let's throw those in. Next, he appears in some body-armor when he's first introduced, so let's dump that in the blister-pack as well.
There ya go, an opponent worthy of the Superman in brains AND brawn. Oh, what a fight it is.
