Elena woke one morning, a week before the men went on the cattle drive. She left a sleeping Juan Pablo in the bed and went to the kitchen to find Marta.
She walked into the kitchen to find Marta already up and sitting at the table with a steaming cup of coffee in front of her.
"You still haven't told him, have you, Elena?" Marta said, looking up at Elena sat down.
"No, Marta, but today I will. I am going to serve him breakfast in bed."
"Bueno. I just finished baking the bread and the coffee is ready. Let me make a tray and you can take it to him."
"Gracias, Marta. You are the best."
"Shush. All that praise will go to my head." She handed Elena a tray with several slices of hot bread, a jar of jam and two cups of coffee.
Elena sat on the bed to wait. The smell of the bread and coffee would be enough to wake him. It was seconds only before he opened his eyes and smiled at her.
"I think I am in trouble. I find my wife on the bed and a tray of food. What did I do?"
"I have been waiting to tell you something. This is the right moment."
"What? You found someone else?" asked Juan Pablo, grinning and reaching out to pat her hand.
She smiled. "No, querido. You are the only one for me. I wanted to ask how would you feel if we had another person living with us?"
He frowned. "Is Tessa going to sell her hacienda and move in with us?"
Elena shook her head and snorted. "Of course not. I mean something wonderful has happened."
He stared at her, then a smile broke on his face. "You mean you are pregnant?"
Oh! The surprise had been spoiled! "Juan Pablo! How did you know? Who told you?"
His face crinkled as he laughed. "No one, querida. I have eyes. I have watched you walk and I have seen you sneak outside to the dependencia. When you return you are a little pale. I asked Doctor Helm and he said it was probably morning sickness."
"Why didn't you say something, mi amor?"
"I was waiting for you to tell me. The husband is always the last to know. The only thing I don't know is when I will have a son."
"What makes you think it will be a boy? Maybe our child will be a girl."
"If the child is a girl, will you teach her to ride and fight with swords?"
"Of course, Juan Pablo," she said as she kissed him.
"Ah! I was right. I am in trouble," he said as he pulled her to him.
Elena pushed away from him. "No, not now. Now eat."
"I have something to do first."
"What is that," she asked.
"This," he said as he stood up and walked to the door and opened it.
At the top of his lings he yelled. "I, Juan Pablo Vallejo am going to be a father!"
He closed the door and walked back to the bed, took the bread and took a bite before giving it to Elena.
