Captain:

preferably a captain should know everything so that they don't give orders that are impossible, since most captains don't want to go and learn the whole Star Trek Encyclopedia I suggest that they start with the ship. If you can choose your class, make sure it's one that you know a bit about and can hold the amount of crew you want. It's nice to be able to give your crew a map too so they know where their character's going :)

Chief Engineer and subordinates:

In order to be a good engineer you should be a technical buff, it's no use having all that wonderful, 24th century technology at your fingertips if you don't know how to use it! Here're a few links that might help:

Chief Operations Officer and subordinates:

The operations people have to know what's going on all the time. In order to know what's happening it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with your ship and crew as you normally have to organize both. Other then that, just relax and wait for orders.
