The Truth: The
Jersey Devil is a piece of folklore from the Garden State that predates
the formation of the United
States. Ever since the 1700's over 200 witnesses have claimed to see a
creature living in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. The origin and the description
varies. The most popular tale is that of a Mrs. Leeds who got pregnant
for the 13th time and wished the child to be a devil. She got her wish,
and it has been lurking around the southern part of New Jersey ever since.
After a contest, New Jersey's new hockey team was named the New Jersey
Devils after the famed creature.
