Episode: Detour (5X04)

Episode synopsis: Mulder and Scully's trip to an FBI seminar is interrupted by a road block in North Florida. turn out a number of people are missing and there are tracks that can't be identified as human or animal. Mulder and Scully decide to stay and investigate. over night the son of one of the missing men claims he saw an invisible creature with red eyes. the authorities dismiss him but Mulder discovers tracks leading into the house. Aided by Jeff Glaser, a tech head with inferred goggles Mulder, Scully go with the rescue leader Michelle Fazekas in search of the creature. Mulder theorizes the creature is attacking people due to encroaching development. Two creatures are spotted with the inferred equipment and the 4 give chase. Mulder watches as Fazekas is dragged down. As the remaining 3 try to find Fazekas, Mulder recounts the story of creatures who in the 1950's terrorized residents of West Virginia and was dubbed moth men. After another encounter with one of the creatures Glaser vanished into the underbrush. Mulder is attacked, but not taken away due to shots fired by Scully. Mulder does go into shock and Scully looks after him. the next morning Scully falls down a hole in the ground where she finds Fazekas and one of the missing men strapped to poles. When Scully realizes one of the creatures are in the cave Mulder tosses her his gun. When the second creature approaches Mulder jumps down next to Scully. Scully fires at one of the creatures when it rushes them. They discover it to be a man who lived like an animal. Mulder notices writing on the walls of the cave and makes a connection to the Spanish conquistadors.
 
 
 
 
 

The Truth: While there some legends of the Mothman go back to the 1700's, The main Mothman flap is considered to have started in 1966 in Salem, West Virginia. After a man's TV reception went out he went outside to see a flying creature with red eyes. The next night two couples saw a s man shaped figure with bat like wings and red eyes move with a shuffling manor, than take to the air and keep pace with their car. the couples took their story to the press the next day where it was dubbed "Mothman". In the following days other credible sightings of  similar creatures were reported. in the general area. It should be noted that at the time of the Ohio valley Mothman encounters other paranormal activity was going on such as 1,000 UFO sightings and sightings of Men in Black.
