Boston, circa 1975 - etching, black ink on white paper. An early etching by the artist. First burn was in the winter of 1996. This plate has had 1/2 dozen burns. First was the skyline, then the treeline. Next an aquatint attempt at clouds and tonal values for the buildings. Due to an overly strong dilution of acid, it failed miserably, and the plate was sandblasted, then wet sanded to remove most of the aquatint. This, a proof from the latest burn, includes the suggestion of the footbridge and water area in the Boston Public Gardens. This is a transitional piece, combining the tight line drawings of the man-made objects represented by the old and new Hancock Towers with the freely expressed random line suggested by nature in the trees and water. Compare this to a very early piece ("Boston") and the later piece "Newbury Street" taking special note as to how the buildings were drawn. Etching, Black Ink on White Paper. Note the spontaneity of line and unrefined drawing of the building and trees. A breakthrough by the artist moving into a more expressive form of art. First etching of Boston's Esplanade. This piece is hand water colored. Inlcudes a footbridge, Longfellow Towers, Mass. General Hospital and the Hatch Shell. Picture is reversed from true life. Second pass of the footbridge, this time without the buildings. Etching - Black Ink on White Paper. Focus is on the differentiation of the trees with depth of contrast. Includes an aquatint. This was done using the image made from the previous etching, so it is now true. Buildings will be added someday (maybe). This is the ghost of a three color print, which preserved a slight suggestion of the colors (blue, green and yellow). Plate was re-inked with black ink to further define the line drawing on the etched plate. Not as loud as the original three color print.
