TRADITIONAL PAINTS SAVED

During summer 2003, much work went in to studying the subject of paint to tackle proposed EU legislation that (if passed) would make it impossible to market and sell cellulose and some coach enamel products. FBHVC is delighted to report that its efforts have paid off.

As a result of lobbying by FBHVC and the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA), amendments to allow the continued production and sale of limited quantities of appropriate materials were tabled by Robert Goodwill, MEP. These amendments (prepared by FBHVC) had the support of the European Commission official responsible for drafting the Directive and were accepted by clear majority at a meeting on 9 September.

Although the Directive has several more stages to go through before becoming law, it was the most important and it is unlikely that these amendments will be affected by future debate.

On hearing the favourable result of the vote, Lord Montagu, FBHVC’s President, said:
"This is very good news: it would be a disaster if traditional paints and varnishes were to be banned. The result shows what can be done when potential problems are picked up at an early stage. FBHVC researched the implications and worked with FIVA’s lobby team to draft the amendments and ensure they were put forward effectively."

ASBESTOS JOINTS CAN CONTINUE

Good news for The Heritage Movement. The Health and Safety Executive has given permission for The Heritage Movement to continue to use asbestos for mud-hole joint rings etc. from the end of this year which was previously the deadline for discontinuing its use.
Thanks are due to The Heritage Railway Association who played a major part in the negotiations for the continued use of asbestos.
We are grateful for this information which has been supplied by Jonathan Wheeler, the EATES vice-chairman and a boiler inspector.

Information taken from EATES website.

THE GRIFFIN IS SOLD

It has been confirmed that John Atkinson from Launceston has purchased Burrell Showmans No 2804 'The Griffin'. Built in 1906 the engine will be mechanically restored but left in its current condition. It is a very large engine and as a 3 speed with 7 foot rear wheels will be a sight to behold (not to mention control) on the road.

John of course is also the owner of a Burrell Gold Medal Tractor that he regularly roads everywhere. It is noted that this engine is not for sale.

We wish John well with his new steed and we all can look forward to seeing 'The Griffin' out and about in the not to distant future.

FODEN STEAM WAGONS FOR KEMBLE

Following the overwhelming success of the 2003 Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Extravaganza, I am delighted to be able to annonce that the 2004 event will take place on Kemble Airfield on August 7th & 8th 2004.

Continuing with last years successful theme of Steam Wagons I am keen to get as many as possible onto the site to help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Stroud Vintage Transport & Engine Club, organisers of the event.

As well as attracting as many differing types of Steam Wagon as possible, I am also making plans to hold a special 'Foden' section. It is hoped to get around 15 Foden Steam Wagons to attend. Of course as well as Steam Wagons, there will be all other types, makes and uses of Steam Power on display.

If anyone would like more information or would like to exhibit at this event please contact Matt Shipton at
svtec_news@hotmail.com or road_steam@hotmail.com and I will be happy to give you more details on the event. Alternatively you can contact me direct on 01453 823684

I am also looking for other associated Foden exhibits that may be interested in attending in 2004.
