To the reader,

This little story begins on Sunday afternoon, 2nd June when I spotted some dear little dwarf daffodils in their brown pot on a lonely shelf in a florists’ shop in the newly-renovated Westfield Plaza in Hornsby. I’m sure I could hear their plaintive cries as they begged me to buy them to take them away from their present limited life. They had a tag of only $5 so I bought them straight away!

The poem began bubbling in my head in Hornsby RSL as we were watching the video ‘What lies Beneath’ with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. It was fairly dark as I fumbled around for a pen and some paper and wrote the first few lines – I managed to decipher them later and this is how it ended up:-

Mini Daffodils

As I walked past the florist shop, I saw a little pot,

With mini yellow daffodils – who said that they felt hot!

They hated the air conditioning with it’s polluted flow;

They really had their petals full, so would I help them go?

They said it was their ambition, to get away from there …

I thought they looked dehydrated (which I thought wasn’t fair!)

They had a tag of $5 and that seemed rather cheap,

so I picked up the little pot and said to them “Don’t weep”

I’ll buy you and I’ll take you home – then you can feel the Sun.

You’ll hear some birds and feel damp rain – I’m sure you’ll have some fun……

I’ll plant you in some nice warm dirt, where you’ll meet other friends;

and you can spend some lovely days – before the Winter ends.
