Switch the power on and the computer loads the 'Windows' program from the 'C'
partition on the 'Hard disc' to the 'Memory'. This takes a few minutes.

There is an indicator light on the front of the computer that indicates if the
'Hard Drive' is running. An 'Icon' - (which is a small image), in this case of
an HOUR GLASS -  will appear on the screen to indicate that the computer is busy.

When the light is 'out' and the busy icon has gone, move the mouse, and the
pointer on the screen will move in the same direction.

Move the mouse pointer to the 'Start' label on the task bar at the bottom left of
the screen and click the left mouse button to cause a 'Menu' to display.
Pressing 'Ctrl' and 'Esc' together will also display the start menu.
It will also display if the 'Windows' key is pressed. (Not on all keyboads)

The items on this menu can be SELECTED by moving the mouse pointer over the item
and 'OPENED' by left clicking, or the items can be selected by using the arrow keys and
OPENED' or started by pressing 'Enter'

If a program page is now displayed on the desktop (screen), close it by moving the
mouse pointer to the top right of the page which is displayed, and left click the
small box with the cross [X].

The pages (windows) can also be closed by pressing 'Alt' and 'F4' at the same time.
Click the 'Start' button and select the 'Shut down' label at the bottom left (the
item will be darkened) and click the mouse left button or press 'Enter'. A message box
will appear on the screen with a selection of commands. The command 'Shut Down'
could have a dot in the centre of a small circle against it. The dot can be moved to the
other items using the up or down arrows.

Move the dot to 'Shut Down'  and press Enter. The computer screen will go dark for
some seconds until a message appears to advise that it is safe to switch off the
computer.

Switch the computer off at the power point.

The 'Insert' key toggles between inserting new letters to the right of the cursor
or overwriting the existing text.

It should be run before installing programs.
It should be run after the computer has 'crashed' or been restarted because of
a 'frozen' screen.

shutdown.
