For example, if the master gets sick it is "written up" that this is
because he, although perfect,
he graciously took on "karma" of his students and is therefore not
feeling well. If a student gets
sick, it is written up that he is a bad person or has bad karma and
is a sinner, etc.
One of the RS books tells the story of a master (I believe it was Sawan
Singh) who was seen
aimlessly walking around stomping ants to death with his shoe.
This was written up as,
"The Master is increasing the size of his sangat" (implying that the
dead ants would get human
bodies because they were killed by a master). Of course if s
student would be seen doing the
same thing he would be written up as a terrible sinner who would now
have to be
reincarnated as some lower life for punishment.
Peer pressure enforces the write-ups. It is OK, for example, for
the master to say he knows
everything but if a student intimates he is smart he will be jumped
on by the group for the sin
of having an "ego" and tormented until he becomes submissive.
The "master role model" is very permissive. As a master you can
do whatever you want and it
is just fine. You can seduce the women, molest the children,
kill the unborn, break any rules you made up for students to follow and
essentially anything else your little heart desires and the role model
write up will justify your actions.
Write-ups generally elevate masters and belittle students. Any positive event which occurs in a student's life must be credited to the master. However, any negative event is considered to be the student's fault because of "bad karma" or "evil ways". Consequently, when a student considers his accomplishments in life he can only see them as negative since anything positive "came from the master".
When the role models and write ups are stripped away, however, lives
of masters and
students quite similar.
