Activated on 1 July 1982 as the flying unit of the 906th Tactical Fighter Group, 482nd Tactical Fighter Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. The 89th TFS flew "DO" tailcoded for "Dayton, Ohio" F-4Ds until conversion to F-16A/B Falcon was initiated in October 1989.
