The 183rd Tactical Fighter Group previously parented F-84F Thunderstreak equipped 170th Tactical Fighter Squadron from Capital IAP, Illinois. Component squadron re-equipped with F-4C in 1972. Become the first Guard unit to fly Phantoms in the tactical fighter role. F-4Ds replaced F-4Cs on 1 January 1981, and in June 1982 the unit first deployed overseas with F-4Ds when it went to the United Kingdom for Coronet Bravo.
Conversion from Phantoms to F-16A/B Falcon was officially completed on 1 January 1989.
