Devil's Den |
|||||||
This charming piece of land is called Devil's Den. It looks like a fun place for kids and dogs to play. On July 2, 1863 it was a place men fought and died for. The right side of Longstreets attack, a division led by John Bell Hood, struck here. Sickles' men could not hold them and the Rebels pressed forward. Confederate sharpshooters in these rocks were a menace all day. At the extreme right of Hood's attack stood two hills that commanded the countryside. One, Round Top, though taller was wooded, making it impossible to put cannons on it and do much good. The smaller hill, Little Round Top, was partially bare of trees. It and the land around it soon became the focus of what may have been the most important part of the Battle of Gettysburg, and maybe even the entire Civil War. |
