Culp's Hill

The fighting at the Round Tops and between the Ridges slowed, but finally the Confederate left commanded by Richard Ewell, attacked Culp's Hill.  The fighting went on long after darkness fell with the Federals holding their positions despite repeated attacks.  At one point the Rebels even got in amongst the Union cannons on Cemetary Hill, but were not able to take the hill.
This is General George S.Greene, a Federal Brigade commander on Culp's Hill.  Greene, known as "Pops" became a hero that night.  He had a son who was also  a Union hero.  Samuel D. Greene was the executive officer on the Monitor, the first Union Ironclad.
