Gouverneur K. Warren |

With the extreme right of the Confederate attack approaching and the summit of Little Round Top only held by a small group of Union signal corps men, Sickles soldiers having moved away. The crisis was at hand. If the Rebels took this position, nearly undefended at the time, they would have been able to put artillery there and the entire Army of the Potomac would have been in their sights. This man, General G.K. Warren was a staff officer for Meade who had sent him to check on the situation. Warren discovered the key to the whole Union position nearly undefended and saw the attack coming. Warren headed off to find help. He was able to find and scrape together enough troops to hold Little Round Top, but the timing was very close. |
