"What are we like?" Fan Survey
- the Web Edition
October 2004

These are the results of the net sum of all responses to my survey that ran from 20 October to 17 November, 2004. Sorry for the delay. As usual, life interfered with fandom, and I wanted to present the total and forum-based breakdown in as a batch. After filtering out some duplicates, it came up just short of 400 returns at 397. That's down from 533 last year. I'm pretty sure this was due to software problems, as the number if hits on the "successful submission" page to the survey form was close to 600. I did contact Yahoo/Geocities and they did acknowledge some software/ hardware problems, but seemed to not be able to do anything about it during the survey. That's unfortunate. I might have to run my own system next time.

I'm getting more requests to add a text box for "other" responses. While I'd like to do that, I simply haven't had time to work out the logistics in my survey software. Maybe next time. Certainly, I'd like to add more general comment boxes at the end of each section because this thing is getting too long to remember much by the time a responder gets to the end. Or perhaps a comment box for each question (which would perhaps suffice for the "other" cases).

I'm also getting more requests about genres. I've just about worked up the nerve to try that question. The problem has always been what genre labels to use, particularly the Japanese ones (like shoujo vs shonen). Certainly, since I can set up multiple response questions, the issue of mixed genres is taken care of. This is probably going to be one of those questions where I'm going to get both useful suggestions are spurious ones in a comment box, but I've got to bite the bullet and abuse myself some more.

Those of you who have been tracking this survey for years may have noticed further forays into the fansub/bootlegging issues. I'm always a bit nervous about these questions because I'm a bit paranoid about legal implications of the info I'm pulling in. Sure, I'm probably not the one that will get into trouble, but if the shoe did ever fall, it would be such a pain in the *bleep*. Still, the issues are there, so I really ought to make some effort to study them.

I'd like to once again thank Anime News Network for posting the announcement for the survey on their forums, and I'd like to thank those of you who posted announcements and pointers on your favourite forums.

Finally, I'd like to thank all of you who went to the daunting trouble of doing the survey. Apparently, many of us are masochists since I got a lot of comments about how long it was AND how fun it was. :) And thanks for the feedback, folks. Most of it was very positive and VERY useful as usual.

Enough jabber, on to the results...

Past questionnaire results can be found at:

For each question, I've tabulated the raw count and the percentage of total returns for each of the possible responses. I've added a "blank" entry to round out the totals. Some questions had multiple responses, so don't expect all tallies to come to 100%.

Enjoy.
