"What are we like?" Fan Survey
February 1998
Ok, so here are some comparisons of my "What are we like?"
questionaire I just did with the one I did in August 1997. Many
of the response percentages didn't change too much. These are
the ones that did change significantly.
- Number of returns: 127 to 146. Up 15% which isn't much considering
that I held this on during the school term. On the otherhand,
the number of repeat participants isn't that high either, about
20 to 30. Either the folks that participated last time didn't
care this time, changed accounts, or went away. Got to add a
question about this next time.
- The number of folks who have been anime fans for less than about
5 years didn't change much, even category by category. The main
difference is in the number of long time fans, where the "6 to
10" and "more than 10" categories went up from about 20% to
30%. Some but not all of that can be attributed to the time
span of the two questionaires, IF there have been no new fans.
- The number of other anime fans that responders had frequent face
to face contact with was significantly different in the "6 to
10" category, with a little more that 10% or 20 more people
filling that response in.
- The percentage of aquaintances considered as fans shifted
somewhat away from the 0% response, mostly to the "1 to 10%"
response, where the 0% dropped from 30% to 18% of responders.
- There was a shift in how many folks understand Japanese. A few
more folks knew "enough to survive alone in Japan", and a
significant number more "only know a few words".
- The number of people that generally watch translated anime
mostly went up about 10%, most of this coming out of the "no
preference" and "mostly untranslated" categories.
- There were a significantly more people that prefered subs,
altogether 13% more. The same is true for purchased anime.
- The percentage of folks that own some Japanese domestic versions
of anime went up 10%, with those who own nothing but western
releases dropping that amount.
- The number of folks willing to get DVD "even if DVD is not
recordable" increased by 10%. Similarly, the number of folks
that concerned with the region locks dropped 10%.
- The related products that changed the most were toys and books,
both up 10%.
