Some of the listed terms will never be use for whatever reason; example being, a story labeled yaoi will automatically mean that it contains one or more lemon scene(s)

angst - tear-jerking, heart-wrenching, wrist-slashing action

asphyxiation - reducing or stopping blood flow usu. to increase sexual stimulation

AU - alternative universe; characters of a certain fandom used in a different universe/world than the original. It can range from a fantastical universe (labeled fantasy) to the modern world to just a small change in the original universe enough to alter it into an AU (divergent from original story). Then there's the twisted AU where a change results in an incredibly difference between the story and the original and therefore can get 'twisted'. Examples would be:

  • : Maldoror's The Source of All Things: sci-fi/fantasy

  • : CleverYoungThief's Smoking with Freshmen: modern

  • : Becka's In Memory I: divergent

  • : Madamhydra's Der Schwarze Traum: mirror

  • : Becka's In Memory I: twisted

BDSM - B&D, D&S, S&M

  • : B&D - bondage and discipline

  • : D&S - dominance and submission

  • : S&M - sadomasochism

canon - the standard or law; in fan terms, it means whatever that is considered official within a fandom. (eg.: in Harry Potter, Voldemort was half-dead and a floating black spirit thing until book/episode 4, in which he was brought back by Peter Pettigrew via Pettigrew's arm, Tom Sr.'s bone(s), and Harry's blood) aka, can be stated as a fact.

crossover - where characters from one series interact with characters from another series. (e.g.: Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho meets the ghost of a wandering samurai and ex-assassin, Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin) different from fusion; see fusion

dark - having morbid tones; personally, I love this term and any works of art to do with it

DMC - Devil May Cry; more info

DN - Death Note; more info

FF+roman numerals - (e.g.: FFVII) for those who have been hiding under a rock for over a decade, it stands for Final Fantasy [insert number of ........]. So FFVII=Final Fantasy 7

fluff - light-hearted stuff. I see it with less plot involvement or just less serious than a WAFF. see WAFF

FMA - Full Metal Alchemist; info and more info

fandom - a community of fans that shares a common interest (e.g.: a Devil May Cry fandom, a Dante fandom, a Dante/Vergil fandom, a yaoi fandom, a baseball fandom, etc.)

fanon - not official or canon, but something widely accepted by the mass consumers

fusion - similar to a crossover, however, combining the worlds/series by having the cast of one playing the roles of another (e.g.: Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fusion; Harry as the vampire slayer, Draco as the slightly neurotic and rebellious vampire, Snape as the British Watcher, Hermoine as the know-it-all witch, Ron as the dorky sidekick, etc.) or for a more technical definition, worlds/series 'fuse' together

IC - in character; as opposed to out of character (see OOC), IC labels characters acting accordingly to their conventional...well, character

GW - New Mobile Report Gundam Wing or Shin Kidousenki Gundam Wing; more info

language - foul language ahead (e.g.: fuck, ass, shit, shit-fuck)

lemon - sex scene with full blown description from insertion to release, with all the bumping, grinding, moaning, and groaning in between

lime - implied sex scene (e.g.: two persons closes door behind them as moaning and groaning sounds emit through said door)

lolita - older person hooks up with a prepubescent girl :eww:

Mary Sue - a story where the author inserts herself/himself into the fic, usu. ensued by being loved just by every person, animal, plant, alien zombies, having the ability to fix every problem, and not to mention the incredible super powers to top it off, although I have heard of such a thing as a good Mary Sue. male variant would be the Marty Stu more info

NCS - "non-consensual sex", otherwise known as rape

OC - original character; a character created as pure mind-child of the author's

OFC - original female character

OMC - original male character

OOC - out of character; a character acting contrary to a given character's personality (e.g.: Snape giving points to Griffindor, a sappily and hopelessly pining Heero, a sweet Schuldich , a pimping Quatre, Bill Gates donating all of his ownings after deciding to live in self-inflicted poverty, etc.) in other words, these things will never happen, or at least seemingly unlikely to

original - original fiction; a story not belonging to any fandom, containing characters created by the author

POV - point of view; the events of a story described through the eyes of a character. Can be in first or third person.

PWP - plot? what plot?; a story without a plot, focusing on a single scene, usually written for gratuitous sexual scenarios

RK - Rurouni Kenshin; more info

RW - Ronin Warriors apparently not Yoroiden Samurai Troopers; more info

sap - something so sickeningly sweet it rots teeth; overly romantic.

Severitus Challenge - a fanfiction challenge I suppose proposed by Severitus where Severus Snape is revealed to be Harry Potter's biological father; more info.

shota - older person hooks up with a prepubescent boy :ick factor:

shounen-ai - literally translated to "boy love" or BL. While boys kiss and pine for each other, it is not as explicit or amatory as yaoi, therefore, no lime or lemon. In other words, non-citrus

tentacles - a type of guro (see guro) where some sort of tentacles are involved in sexual activities (harassment, rape, pleasuring, etc.)

TWT - timeline? what timeline?; a fic that does not follow the canon storyline. Not exactly divergent AU (see AU) as the fic does not actually diverge from canon but the lapse from the timeline, which usually does not make sense, will eventually converge once again into canon plot

UST - unresolved sexual tension; lots of pining, no reciprocation

violence - brawling, physical hurting, etc.

WIP - Work in progress; something not yet completed

WK - Weiss Kreuz; more info

yaoi - acronym for "yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi" (no climax, no point, no meaning). Basically, it means "a roll in the hay" or PWP of gay sex, but the use of "yaoi" has changed, esp. for us English speaking fans. For kuria, let's just say it means that a specific piece contains sexual situations, solely of the male variety

YST - Yoroiden Samurai Troopers apparently not Ronin Warriors; more info

yuri - literally translates to "lily"; means girl/girl relationship, but unlike the clearer distinction between yaoi and shounen-ai, there is an even less distinction between yuri and shoujo-ai (girl love) for many

+, x, and /

+ indicates light romantic relationship; shounen-ai

x is more sexual, think yaoi

/ is a more Western term for "x"

usually, the name before the symbol implies that person taking the dominant role, and the name after the symbol, the submissive role. Of course with some stories, there sometimes really isn't a dom. or sub. and could be written as such: Aya/Schuldich/Aya (I'm just gonna use "/" and "+" with regular names while "x" will be specifically used for the Gundam characters e.g. Harry/Draco; 1x2)
