IN THE GARDEN

The World's all time favorite gospel song

Lyrics by C. Austin Miles

THE GARDEN IS THE GARDEN OF THE RESURRECTION. MARY MAGDALENE CAME EARLY ON EASTER MORNING AND DID NOT FIND THE CRUCIFIED BODY OF JESUS IN THE SEPULCHER. SHE TURNED AND SAW A FORM WHOM SHE MISTOOK FOR THE GARDNER. MY FIRST EASTER SERMON I ENTITLED, "SUPPOSE IT HAD BEEN THE GARDNER," EXPLORING THE CONSEQUENCES WHICH WOULD HAVE AFFECTED US IF JESUS HAD NOT RISEN FROM THE DEAD. BUT HALLELUJAH, CHRIST AROSE.

THE AUTHOR OF THE HYMN PUT THE FOLLOWING WORDS INTO MARY MAGDALENE'S MOUTH IN THE GARDEN OF THE RESURRECTION ON THE FIRST EASTER MORNING:

I come to the Garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses.
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear,
The son of God discloses.

CHORUS:

And he walks with me and he talks with me,
And he tells me I am his own.
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

II.

He speaks, and the sound of his voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing.
And the melody that he gives to me
Within my heart is ringing.

III.

I'd stay in the garden with him
Though the night around me be falling,
But he bids me go with the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

Raymond Cox has played and sung this song in Hungary this year (1997) five times, each time translated magnificently by Viktoria Oroszi (she says it is her favorite song too): first, at the June 14, 1997 Konferencia at MOM in Budapest, second, on Sunday morning, June 15 at the Csepel theater, third, on Sunday afternoon, June 15 at Roza's church in Skekesfeharvar and fourth and fifth, in the Tat and Tatabanya churches on Saturday afternoon, June 22.
