Strong quake strikes Indonesia's Moluccas
A strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Moluccas Saturday, but there
were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake hit at 2008 GMT and was centred 115 kilometres (72 miles) southwest of
Ternate at a depth of 47 kilometres, Indonesia's meteorological agency said.
The agency said there were no immediate reports of damage, although the quake was
felt quite strongly in Ternate and Labuha, a few kilometres to the south. There was no
danger of a tsunami, the agency said.
The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates
meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in
December 2004, which killed some 168,000 people in Aceh province alone.
