Indonesia landslide toll rises to 40
KUPANG, Indonesia, March 8, 2007 (AFP) - The death toll from devastating
landslides and flash floods in eastern Indonesia has risen to 40 -- with dozens still
missing -- an official said Thursday.
"Rescuers have recovered 40 bodies and still continue the search for 34 missing
people," Christian Rotok, the head of the district where the tragedy occurred, told
AFP.
The toll had stood at 36 dead and 38 missing after landslides and flash floods on
Flores island on Saturday buried entire villages.
Flores lies 1,700 kilometres (1,050 miles) east of Jakarta, the capital of the sprawling
Indonesian archipelago.
The monsoon season is currently at its height over the country, causing landslides
and flooding in various places. str/skj/jw
