Tectonic quake rattles Ternate Island
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale
jolted Ternate island in North Maluku province Tuesday morning, the national
meteorological and geophysics agency said.
The epicenter of the quake which occurred at 8:03 a.m. was located 119 km
northwest of Ternate and 43 km below sea level, the Jakarta-based Meteorological
and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said here Tuesday.
The quake's epicenter was also traced at between 1.49 degrees northern latitude and
126.56 degrees eastern longitude, it said.
The temblor could also be felt at between II and III Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) in
Ternate, II MMI in Manado (North Sulawesi) and II-III MMI in Bitung (North Sulawesi).
There was no immediate report of material loss and casualties.
Last week a tectonic earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked West
Sumatra province, killing over 70 people and injuring hundreds of others.
Many Indonesian areas have been shaken by quakes for the past few years including
the most devastated one which levelled Aceh on December 26, 2004.
Indonesia is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" which is prone to earthquakes and
volcanic activities. (*)
