Police clash with residents, killing two, wounding dozens
PALU, Central Sulawesi (Antara): Clash between police officers and residents killed at
least two people and wounded dozen others in Central Sulawesi's town of Banggai,
Wednesday, report says.
Ridwan, 28, was shot dead on his head by a police officer, during the clash while
Julais, 31, was killed after he was hit with police weapons, Antara news agency
reported.
The clash occurred after police wanted to expel residents, who have occupied
government offices since Feb. 20. Their action has paralyzed public services in the
regency.
The occupation was to protest the plan to move the regental capital from Banggai to
Salakan as ruled in a law issued by the House of Representatives.
There is no clear report why resident opposed the plan. (**)
