Maluku moves terror convicts
AMBON, Maluku: The Maluku Police moved 16 convicts, most responsible for terror
crimes, to the Nusakambangan penitentiary in Cilacap, Central Java, on Thursday.
The prisoners, whose sentences range from decades to life in prison, were previously
held at the detention center in Waiheru and a prison in Ambon.
Their crimes include an attack on the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) police post in Western
Seram in which five Brimob members and a civilian were killed, and a shooting at the
Villa karaoke parlor in Ambon that left two civilians dead.
The convicts were taken to the Pattimura Airport in Ambon in an armored car amid
tight security before being flown to Semarang.
"They were flown to Semarang using an Air Force plane. According to our information,
they will go to the Cipinang prison before moving to Nusakambangan," Maluku Police
spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Tomy Napitupulu said in Ambon on Thursday.
Family members protested the transfer. Ayu Pattimura, the wife of Ongen Pattimura,
who is serving a life sentence, said the move came without warning.
"The police and prison authorities did not send me a letter or notify me directly,
despite standard procedures," she said.
The other 15 prisoners are Asep Jaja, Abdullah Umamity, Jairudin Asel, Hasanudin
Muchtar, Rusli Amiludin, M. Saleh, Fatur Syamsudin, Tedy Gozali, Syamsul Bahri
Sangadji, Ismail Yamsehu, Erwin Wakano, Hardi Tuasikal, Talib Patty, Ridwan
