Explosion in Ambon injures 13
AMBON: A homemade bomb exploded in Ambon's Yos Sudarso port complex in
Maluku province Saturday, leaving 13 residents injured. No one was killed in the
incident.
Maluku Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Tomy Napitupulu told The Jakarta Post that
the low-explosive bomb detonated at 9 a.m.
The incident occurred just outside the port's passenger exit door, near to where
sidewalk traders sold merchandise and relatives waited for passengers on board the
K.M. Siguntang passenger ship.
Tomy said that based on preliminary investigations, the homemade bomb was
packaged along with a battery, coil and timer. Dozens of 10-centimeter-long nails
were also placed inside the package.
"We still don't know the motive behind the bombing but it's clearly intentional," he
said.
He said he hoped residents in conflict-torn Ambon, which was hit by sectarian conflict
from 1999-2001 prior to the signing of a peace deal, were not provoked by the
incident.
All 13 injured residents were treated at Al Fatah hospital near the port. Ten were
allowed to return home, while three who were seriously injured were required to stay
overnight.
A seriously injured victim, Anton Hatalabessy, 22, underwent surgery for over two
hours. Surgeons removed nails and small iron fragments from his right leg. -- JP
