Yudhoyono told to help Agus Dwikarna free from Philippine jail
MAKASSAR (Antara): South Sulawesi Governor Amin Syam Tuesday said that he
had sent a letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to seek the way to free
Agus Dwikarna from a jail in the Philippines.
Amin said that he had received a letter from Agus, who asked the governor to free him
from the jail, which he had occupied since early 2002.
Speaker of South Sulawesi Legislative Council Agus Arifin Nu'mang said that lawyers
of Agus Dwikarna were trying to free the Indonesian Muslim activist, who was
accused of having explosive materials and involved in terror activities.
"Lawyers of Agus Dwikarna seek clemency for him. It needs support from the
Indonesian Foreign Ministry," Agus Arifin was quoted by Antara news agency as
saying.
Agus Dwikarna was arrested together with Tamsil Linrung, another Indonesian Muslim
activist, who is now a member of the House of Representative. They were accused of
keeping explosive materials.
They were also linked to a number of terror activities in the country. Tamsil was freed
after Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo intervened the case, while Agus
was sentenced to 10-year jail term. Tamsil said that Agus was innocent. (**)
