Police suspect Jemaah Islamiyah in southern Philippines
bombing
MANILA (AP): Investigators suspect the JemaahIslamiyah terror group was
responsible for a bomb that killed three people in the southern Philippines, a police
official said Wednesday.
"The intelligence community suspects the Jemaah Islamiyah, based on the bomb that
was used," said Chief Inspector Benjamin delos Santos, deputy police chief of
Tacurong city.
Regional armed forces spokesman Lt. Col. Julieto Ando said the military also
suspected the Indonesia-based regional terror group, "but we are not discounting
other angles, including political and personal."
The blast Tuesday, near the Tacurong market and a restaurant where politicians and
election officials were meeting, killed three people and wounded at least 30. An earlier
police report had said four were killed, but delos Santos said one victim was counted
twice.
He said the specific explosive used was still being determined, and that fragments
have been recovered which show that nails were added to increase casualties. (***)
