Tual Prosecutors' Office vandalized
AMBON, Maluku: The Tual Prosecutors' Office in Southeast Maluku regency was
vandalized Wednesday by local youths angry at the detention of two village heads
allegedly involved in a graft case.
No casualties were reported, but the building's windows were broken and various office
appliances were destroyed.
Southeast Maluku Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ony Budi said Thursday that the attack
was sparked by the detention of Sathean village head Anton Renyaan and Ibra village
head Abdullah Renwarin at the office.
The two were charged with misusing Rp 4 billion (US$444,4000) issued for land
clearance at the two villages for the construction of an airport project, Ony said.
"The money should have been handed over to residents of the two villages whose
lands were cleared," he said.
Ony said that the police detained 12 of the attackers and questioned them to identify
their backgrounds and their roles in the attack. -- JP
