Terror network dangerous, well-organized despite arrests

JAKARTA (AP): The Southeast Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah is well-organized and dangerous despite hundreds of arrests in recent years, national police said Friday, after seizing a cache of weapons and bomb-making manuals in central Indonesia.

Six alleged militants from the network were captured this week, including a man identified as Mujadid, who has been accused of involvement in the deadly 2004 Australian Embassy bombings in the capital Jakarta, said spokesman Maj. Gen. Sisno Adiwinoto.

Anti-terror police also seized more than a dozen weapons, explosives and bomb-making documents Friday from the home of Aman Suryanto, a seventh suspect who died on his way to the hospital following separate police raids on Java island, he said.

"This group has a very good network with a very orderly working structure," Adiwinoto told reporters.

Jemaah Islamiyah has been blamed for a string of terrorist attacks in Indonesia.

The 2002 twin nightclub bombings on Bali island, 2003 blasts at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, 2004 bombings at the Australian Embassy and the 2005 restaurant bombings on Bali together killed more than 240 people, many of them foreign tourists.

Abu Dujana is said to head the network and police hope the recent arrests will bring them closer to the terror suspect, Adiwinoto said, adding police believe Dujana ordered Suryanto to store the arms. (**)
