This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on information provided
by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), National Coordinating Board for
the Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for the
Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) West Sumatera, District Coordinating
Unit for Management of Disaster (SATLAK PB) Solok, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI)
and media reports.
I. SITUATION
1. West Sumatra Province SATKORLAK PB and all SATLAKs continue to send relief
items to the areas affected by the two 6 March earthquakes in West Sumatra. Search
and rescue activities are ongoing. Schools in some areas have been closed until
further notice, although in others students are returning to school.
2. West Sumatra Province SATKORLAK PB today reported at 13:00 that the death
toll has reached 72 people. The total number of people with serious injuries is now
506, while those with minor injuries totals 134. The details are as follows:

3. In addition, it has also been reported that 9,717 houses, 206 schools, 65 offices,
195 places of worship, and 45 other public facilities have been damaged. The details

4. The BMG Team has reported from Padang that monitoring posts near Mt. Talang
and Mt. Marapi have recorded increased volcanic activity following the 6 March
earthquakes. While conditions have now returned to normal, BMG is closely
monitoring the two volcanoes.
II. NATIONAL RESPONSES
1. During their visits to the affected areas yesterday, BAKORNAS PB provided IDR 50
million (USD 5,430) to the relief effort, while the Coordinating Minster of People's
Welfare has committed another IDR 50 million (US 5,430), the Ministry of Social
Affairs committed IDR 500 million (USD 54,300), and the Ministry of Health committed
IDR 100 million (USD 10,870) to provincial and district government.
III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSES
1. The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Cooperation of Spain has allocated EUR 100,000 (USD 131,640) to assist
the affected population. The assistance will be channelled through the NGOs
Médecins du Monde and Action Contre la Faim. The assistance will concentrate on
providing the affected population with basic health care and supply of food and
drinking water, with special attention to infants.
2. The government of Canada had allocated IDR 1.95 billion (USD 212,000) for the
quake victims. The money will be disbursed through the Canada Fund for Local
Initiatives to meet immediate needs in the affected area.
3. Meanwhile, the United States Government has allocated USD 100,000 in
emergency assistance. The money, which will be channeled through the U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID) and Mercy Corps, will be dedicated to
emergency supplies such as hygiene kits, plastic sheets, jerry cans, cooking utensils
and sleeping mats.
4. The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) is sending two members of its disaster
management unit to Padang to conduct assessments. They will arrive in Padang 8
March and work together with the SRC's sister society.
5. ECHO is undertaking an assessment and its decision of financial allocation will be
made based on the results of the assessment.
6. MSF has dispatched one medical doctor, three nurses, two psychologists, three
logisticians and 14 tonnes of relief materials, which consists of 2,500 blankets, 750
hygiene kits, six dispensary tents for hospitalization, 500 units of plastic sheeting,
medicine, and water bladders.
7. IOM has deployed some emergency response personnel to the earthquake affected
areas in West Sumatra and has established a liaison and coordination center with
local authorities at the Governor's office in the Provincial capital of Padang. At the
request of the Vice Governor and with initial funding from the Dutch government, IOM
has begun to set up a relief delivery transportation and database tracking system; the
first relief deliveries for government and non-governmental agencies under this
coordination center will commence on 9 March. IOM will be procuring and delivering
critically needed non food items. IOM Medical staff are conducting a rapid
assessment of health facilities in the hardest hit areas around Solok, and will
thereafter be working with Provincial and District Health authorities to help with the
care of injured persons and their attending families. UNICEF is planning to procure
waterbladders, school tents, hygiene kits, jerry cans, and cooking sets. UNICEF
supplies are on their way to West Sumatra and are due to arrive tomorrow.
8. Mercy Corps, Save the Children and CARE are conducting a joint rapid
assessment of affected communities in Solok District, the worst hit area of the two
earthquakes. The agencies response will be based on the results of this joint
assessment. Other organizations on the ground include OXFAM, Caritas, OPOR,
WEU, CRS and World Vision. OCHA has set up an information desk at SATKORLAK
