ACT Appeal Indonesia: Jakarta Floods - ASID71

Source: Action by Churches Together International (ACT)

Appeal Target: US$ 240,851

Geneva, 13 March 2007

Dear Colleagues,

Following several days of torrential rains in the first week of February 2007, the worst floods in living memory hit the Indonesian capital Jakarta, leaving much of the city under water and paralyzed for several days. More than 280,000 people were seriously affected and around 60,000 were displaced by the floods. Many of the worst affected areas are among the poorest in Jakarta as the land is insecure and prone to flooding -- only those who can not afford housing iin a better location live along the river banks in low-income and squatter settlements. One month later, the work continues, hampered by continuing heavy rainfall, and many houses that remain intact are covered by thick mud. With the heavily polluted water and a recent outbreak of dengue fever, there is a continued concern about the spread of more diseases.

In the crisis phase, US$50,000 rapid response funding was sent to ACT members Church World Service (CWS) Indonesia, Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU) and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia (YTBI) to provide immediate relief assistance. The portion of the funds sent to CWS is now considered as an advance contribution to this appeal. CWS assisted YTBI by supporting their public kitchen in Jatinegara (East Jakarta). They also conducted a joint assessment in Matraman (Central Jakarta) and CWS distributed 100 blankets and two tents to set up four public kitchens in the IDP post in Koinonia Church Jatinegara, which is run by YTBI partner Students of Theology College / Sekolah Tinggi Teologi (STT). YEU also provided medical assistance through two mobile health clinic teams, also working with YTBI and their implementing partner churches. In addition, a team from David McAntony Gibson foundation (DMGF) Canada provided on-the-job training to the medical teams in the use of water filters which are now available for use in future disasters. YEU and YTBI closed their operations at the end of February.

With support from this appeal, CWS Indonesia will continue its assistance to 5,596 of the worst affected households in 3 Kelurahan (urban villages) with its implementing partners Yayasan Rumah Kita (Cipinang - East Jakarta), Yayasan Annur Muhayam (Bukit Duri -- South Jakarta), and Citra Bhayangkari (Karet Tengsin -- Central Jakarta). Activities include provision of drinking water, food and non food items, first aid, and key provision of clean water and sanitation to flood survivors. In addition, some work will be integrated to raise affected communities and CWS partners' preparedness in the event of future floods.

Project Completion Date: CWS Indonesia- 30 June 2007
