Munir's Murder Not Stand-Alone Case
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The examination council has concluded that the use of a
false letter by Pollycarpus Budihari Priyono, the accused in Munir's murder, was not a
stand alone case.
The council has said it considers that it was impossible for the letter to exist if it had
not been related with other institutions.
"There was a withholding of facts that points to the involvement of certain parties,
including the State Intelligence Agency and Garuda airlines," said Rudy Satriyo
Mukantardjo, head of the examination council, during the reading of the verdict in the
public examination of the Munir murder case yesterday (03/14) in Jakarta.
The examination council has been evaluating the verdict on Pollycarpus since the end
of January 2007.
The evaluation has involved the criminal legal expert of University of Indonesia, Rudy
Satriyo Mukantardjo, the human rights figure Soetandjo Wignjosoebroto, the ad hoc
judge from the human rights court Komariah Emong Sapadjaja, the advocate Irianto
Subiakto and Head of the National Legal Reform Consortium Firmansyah Arifin.
Firmansyah has stated that the withholding of facts emerged in Pollycarpus' session
at the Central Jakarta District Court.
For instance, there were telephone conversations five times between Pollycarpus and
the State Intelligence Agency's office.
In fact, the fact that there were telephone converstaions between Pollycarpus and
former State Intelligence official Muchdi P.R., were removed by the cassation board.
Athough the cassation verdict has stated that Pollycarpus was proved to have used a
falsified letter, the Supreme Court did not discover how the letter was issued or who
issued it.
The Supreme Court, said Firmansyah, was actually authorized to reinvestigate the
case.
In addition, according to the examination council, the Supreme Court's verdict would
in fact create impunity for the perpetrators. RINI KUSTIANI
