Excerpts from Nathan's e-mail to his parents
April 1 - This week is one of exams for the students. They have studying time every day from 7 to 9:30pm, which can't be too fun, and I know they are not relishing taking tests. So anyway, last night we brought all the students in a classroom and gave them a soda each. You should have heard them cheer and see the looks on their faces. It was great.

Apr 9 - So far this year has really been amazing and I think the whole year will change me to some extent. However sad I will be when it comes time to leave, I will be ready to go back to school and finish up. After graduation I have no idea whether I will go to grad school, start working in the US or go to the mission field anywhere else. I still do have at least a couple years to decide though.

     Apr 14 -
Yes, it really does rain every day in the rainy season and not just a little. Not too cool for our clothes on the line and for the muddy roads. It is neat to collect the water from the roof though.

Apr 18 - We just got back from our youth rally at Epke and it's probably the most memorable yet. We were supposed to leave Friday morning, but the guy who was supposed to lead us there did not come until Saturday morning. Anyway, after about an hour of driving on a dirt road, we finally got to the escarpment and started riding down. From the start we could see that it was not the brightest idea but Joseph kept on telling us that the place was just near. By that I guess he meant less than an hour, but then everybody says that here. Anyway, the "road" was a very narrow trail made up of grass, rocks and dirt and you could tell that no car had been down the trail in a      long time. We finally got to the school where the rally was held and it was such a cool place. It was basically on a cliff with a great view of the Great Rift Valley. The rally went so well; Chris, Ben and I spoke and then we had a break. We played Frisbee and all kinds of other games with the kids. Then Chris and I performed some card tricks and the Africans get so amazed. It's really funny. Thanks so much for sending the book on card tricks. The rallies always go so much better when the church has a leader organizing it. Anyway, as we were having our break we could see clouds come in, and then we saw that it was pouring rain in the valley. Knowing that our Trooper would have a hard time getting back up the trail in normal conditions, we knew that we had to leave before it started pouring and the road got muddy. We thanked the people so much and excused ourselves for leaving early, then started high tailing it. About half way up, the rain started pouring down and the Trooper started to get stuck. What's tricky is that this path is basically on the side of the cliff with no guard rails, so if you start sliding there's a chance the car could fall down the cliff. After many attempts at pushing and basically doing all we could, we made it to the top in about a couple hours (which should have taken about a half hour). Right after we made it to the top, the car died. We figured out the battery was dead, so we pushed the car and push started it, but it died again. So anyway, here we are in the middle of nowhere at night not knowing what's wrong and trying to find help. Tons of village people would just come to see us sit on our car in the dark. After realizing that we would not find any help that night, we pushed our car to the next house, and asked if we could park our car there and pitched our tent in their yard to sleep. They were very nice about it, and 7 hours after leaving the rally (45 minutes away) we were able to sleep. Today we figured out that a cable was short circuiting, the battery was dead and there was no engine coolant left. We were so exhausted and we're so glad to be home now.
April 18th - Excerpts from Mark's e-mail to his parents
Let me tell you about the youth rally of 4-17! Well we left yesterday for the rally at like 7am and we got there at around 9am. The location was in the middle of the escarpment! We are on the highlands above the rift valley here at the school, only about 40 kilometers from the drop off to the rift valley. So where we had the rally was at a church in the middle of the drop off. So you look up and see the mountainous heights and you look down and see into the valley and the chain of volcanoes in the middle of it. It is incredible that people live and farm in such a dramatic place! It was so beautiful! I don't know why anyone would live where we do if they had a choice! Seriously it looks like west Texas sort of. The only bad part of it was the road. It was really bad. I don't think any vehicle had driven down the road probably ever. We made it down okay!
The rally was great. There were many church leaders there and many young leaders that have gone to the great commission school in Nairobi. Nathan, Ben, Chris, and Denton were scheduled to speak on Saturday and then I was going to preach on Sunday morning. Well everything went well on Saturday. The guys talks went fine and then we went to the field and played some Frisbee and duck, duck, goose, and some other fun games. It was such an amazing view!!!! Anyways back to the drama! We were thinking and we decided that we road was really bad, so if it was going to rain we would leave before it got slippery. Well, it was starting to rain in the valley and we decided to leave at about 5:30pm much to the dismay of the leadership but they were cool about it. So we started up the treacherous slope! Denton and I were on the back so we could be ready for quick pushing if needed. About five minutes out it started pouring! I had my wallet and things in my pocket so I took them out and handed them in thought the window. Well later on the way up after I was completely soaked I realized that the phone was in my pocket! Ahhh! So we put that inside and keep going and then we get stuck really bad. And the bad thing is that the car wouldn't start! Plus there is not much to keep us from slipping off the right side!!! So we try it a few times and then we decide to get the winch out. It will not even put out of the spool!!! Finally the car starts and Nathan gives it a try and amazingly he makes it up the slope! Okay so there are a few other stops but we basically make it up the rest of the way. Then at the last hill the car stops and the battery is gone! The dash board doesn't even light up when we turn it to on! So half of the community is out to see what is up, oh and it is getting close to dark, about 6:45pm. We push the car up the rest of the way and we even try to push start it. It starts for a second, but the engine dies soon after. So we are stuck! We call the church where we were and a company of about fifty gets there and finds a family that will let us leave the car at their house. We go eat. Chai and bread. Oh and it is about 9:30 by the time the church people get there. It takes about 1:30 for the food. We get back to the car and pitch our tent in the people's yard and sleep. We have sketchy plans with a mechanic from Eldoret for him to come to help us. Oh and we looked at the engine but there was not much to see in the dark. Anyways we wake up and after much effort we find a mechanic from the community. It is a really remote place!!! Oh and our mechanic from eldoret called and said he had a family emergency so he couldn't come!!! Yeah right. Anyways so it turns out that there was just a short and that the engine was overheating from lack of coolant.
