our centers are fine!

Centers are areas in our classroom that support and enhance reading and writing as well as other subject areas. The children work at centers while I work with small groups. Our center names, of course, relate to the ocean theme. Our centers are:

Writing Reef - The students practice their writing skills at this center using various writing materials; pens, pencils, markers, letter stamps, etc.

Book Bayou - The students practice their reading skills at this center. They use special pointers to help them read and/or pretend read lots of big books, poems and song charts.

Listening Lagoon - The students listen to tapes and read along in their own copy to the book. After the story they can write about or illustrate their favorite part of the story.

Computer Key - The students use various software programs to practice our Kindergarten skills. They will also explore sites on the internet with teacher supervision.

Magnet Marina - The students use magnetic alphabet letters to spell their names, sight words, or theme related words. They can also retell stories using magnetic or flannel characters.

Clay Cove - The students develop their small motor skills and use their creativity. They can form letters by rolling out the clay or use the alphabet cutters to spell their name or other words.

Alphabet - The students practice recognizing uppercase and lowercase letters and their corresponding sounds through the use of plastic letters, magnetic letters, link letters, puzzles, an electronic phonics learning desk and more.

Basket Games - The students play and work with various manipulatives, puzzles, and skill games.
