It is very disturbing to see all the precious cats and dogs that are roaming the streets.How does this happen? It is not the animals fault,they are just doing what God had intended them to do.No, it is the owner of these pets who are at fault.They are irresponsible and create problems that they cannot even imagine.

There are thousands of these sweet,innocent animals that are put to death each year.People think that kittens and puppies are so sweet which they are; these sweet kittens and puppies grow up and these same people discard them as if they are yesterdays trash.

There are other reasons other than overpopulation for having your pet spayed or neutered.One important reason is the health risks.Even an indoor cat may try to sneak outside when the mating season grabs hold of her instincts.During the call of the mating ritual there often leads to fighting between two toms and even between two females and a tom.There is a higher risk of FIV at this time,more commonly called Feline Aids.The odds of stray cats carying Feline Infectious Peritonitis(FIP) or Feline Leukemia (FeLV) are at least double that of pet cats.So if your pet cat has a chance to get out when the mating season comes the danger is great that she will come in contact with a stray that may be a carrier of the disease.She in turn,would pass it onto the kittens.

There is also the danger that if your indoor cat gets out during the mating season she has a high risk of being hit by a car,being attacked by other animals,or becoming lost.The peak of mating season is in spring and females and males have a tendency to roam and many of them become lost and are unable to make their way back home.

I have even heard people say that they wanted their cat to have just "one litter" so that little Johnny or Susie could experience the miracle of birth.Having kittens is not an instructional tool for our youngsters.What happens after little Fluffy gives birth to her kittens?Are the parents of little Johhny or Susie going to provide a loving home for all the kittens?Are they going to have Fluffy spayed,and when the kittens are old enough are they going to have them spayed or neutered? I do not think that entered their mind.This kind of thinking,to use your cat as a nature lesson is pure selfishness.Go to the library,rent a video or just sit your child down and tell him in language he can understand the process of the miracle of birth.

It makes me so upset when I drive down the street and see the pets of my neighbors running loose.I use the term pets loosely because they cannot care for them very much when they let them roam all over.They are cold,hungry and frightened.Is it really loving your pet if you allow him to run the streets,to be bashed in the head by unfeeling "humans",to be deliberately ran over by a car, to eat out of garbage cans,or in the case of dogs, to be chained up in a yard with no food or water.None of these animals are strays. They all belong to someone in my neighborhood.It brings me to tears.This is what happens to the cats and dogs in my area.Anyone that would mistreat an animal would also mistreat a child.

What about the excuse,I can't afford to have her spayed.That dosen't cut ice either.There are agencies in every community that have no-cost or low-cost spay and neuter programs.Our local shelter gives each cat and dog that is adopted their first set of shots and has them spayed or neutered.If they are too young to be spayed or neutered then the new "parents" are given a certificate to take to any of our local vets to have the kitten or puppy spayed or neutered when they reach the proper age.This is all included in the price of the adoption.The people for whatever reason still do not do it.They should take the responsibility and have their pets spayed or neutered.All life is precious.

Thank God that there are rescue agencies that have shelters that are "no kill" shelters but they can only do so much.

Do you believe you aren't adding to the pet overpopulation problem if you find good homes for all your pet's kittens or puppies ? Then consider this:

Suppose there are 10 families in your community that want kittens and can provide good homes for them, but there are 15 kittens who need good homes. When each of the 10 families takes a kitten, there will be 5 "leftover" kittens who have no future except humane euthanasia.
Then suppose you let your cat have a litter of five kittens.

There are now 20 kittens in the community who need good homes... but still only 10 good homes available. Even if you manage to place every one of your five kittens with one of the ten available homes, there are now 10 leftover kittens where before there were only 5. You've created more animals, but you haven't created more homes - just taken some homes away from other kittens and puppies, dogs and cats. By allowing your pet to breed, you've increased the number of kittens that will have to be euthanized because no one wants them.

Until breeding is limited to the point where there are more than enough good homes available for all the kittens and puppies being born in your community, you can't find a good home for every one.

America's society is becoming a convenient throw-away society, a society which is throwing irresponsibility on responsibile ones to pick up and clean up the mess they create and leave behind, having so little regard for life and death

Prayer For Animals

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals. Especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death.

We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Doris Day Animal League

"Spay Day USA" the fifth annual campaign to save the lives of millions of cats and dogs, took place on Wednesday, February 24, 1999. This is a national campaign, sponsored by the Doris Day Animal League. In its first four years, Spay Day USA has proven to be a phenomenal success as over 250,000 animals have been altered, including over 108,000 in 1998. These spay and neuter surgeries have already prevented literally millions of unwanted puppies and kittens from being born. For 1999, the Doris Day Animal League has set a goal of completing at least 100,000 spays and neuters.
