Raxl
walks into the dining room carrying a pitcher of juice seeing the window open
she puts the juice on the table and closes the window. Alison comes to the dining room and
remarks about the heavy winds.
"It's the trade winds, they do make themselves heard. Would you like
breakfast now?" Raxl asks. "If Dr.
Menkin is coming down I will wait for him." "Haven't you heard?" Raxl asks. "What?" "Dr. Menkin is gone." "You mean he left the Island." Alison
says. "Left this world." "He's dead!" Alison replies. "Maljardin, the Garden Of Evil is cursed
again." Raxl says. Alison becomes
agitated. She walks away from Raxl, and then turns around. "What happened?" "In this house it is wise not to ask to
many questions. There is evil all around everywhere." Raxl tells her as she
walks around the Great Hall following Alison. Alison asks Raxl to tell her everything
she knows of the death of Dr. Menkin.
"Dr. Menkin wanted to leave. And as you know the only way is by boat. The
steps leading down to the dock are slippery. He fell." "So that's the cry we heard last
night." "Dr. Menkin or the wind, it
makes strange sounds." Raxl tells her.
"That was a human cry. Was he alone?" "No." "Who was with him? Quito?" "No." "Jean Paul Desmond? " "Yes, or that devil!" Raxl yells. They both turn to look at Jacques
portrait. "Come come Raxl, Jacques
Eloi Des Mondes lived three hundred years ago." "All I can say doctor is we the
believers of the Serpent God believe the body belongs to the devil. The soul
belongs to God. When a man dies his soul rises to heaven, but if it is trapped
in the body it molds and decays. It is then trapped in the fires of eternal
hell." "That should have been the
ending of him then." Alison says.
"That's what we thought when the silver nail was driven through the
conjure doll's head dooming him forever. But now I don't know!" Raxl runs up the
staircase very upset. "But why the
terrible fate for him?" Alison calls up to Raxl. Raxl stops and looks down at Alison. "He
was a murderer. And I'm afraid he is a murderer again." Raxl turns and walks
down the stairs. "I reckon Dr Menkin did not fall, he was pushed!" "By an evil spirit?" Alison walks away
from Raxl. She does not believe her.
"The spirit that is poisoning our Master's mind!" "I'll admit Jean Paul is acting very
strangely. It's because of my sister's death." Alison tells her. "It is because the devil is possessing
him!" Raxl yells. "No! It's this
Island! Your fears are affecting me to! I have to get away from here! So should
all of us!" Alison rushes back to Raxl.
"He will hold us all here!"
"Who? Jean Paul?" Alison asks.
"That
demon who tries to control him!" Raxl turns away from Alison. She looks toward
Jacques portrait. Thunder rumbles outside. "I can say no more." She starts
rushing back up the staircase, stopping she turns to Alison. "You don't
understand the devil! You never knew him! " Raxl rushes the rest of the way up
the stair. The wind is howling,
thunder is booming. Alison becomes nervous. Walking around the room she is
hugging her arms against herself. "The dream was so real! This Island it is
evil!" Alison spins around quickly. "I have to get away! Back to reason. Away
from him!" Alison cries aloud turning towards Jacques portrait.
On
the Mainland in the cafe, Vangie is reading her tarot cards. Tim grabs her
wrist. "What does the future hold?"
"Intrigue." "Terrific, but
what else?" Tim asks as he takes a seat at Vangie's table. "If I tell you anymore you won't have
anything to anticipate." she tells him with a smile. "Listen to the wind, it sounds
terrifying." "Only to those that
have something to fear." Vangie tells him.
"You can see that in the cards to and the storm that is coming up?" Tim
asks. "It should blow it out before
the day is over." "It would be nice
if it blew my personal Mafia away. That hood they sent to keep an eye on me has
been on my back like a dirty shirt."
"Until Dr. Carr gets Jean Paul to commission you to do a portrait of his
wife. Then you will have enough money to pay off your debt, then life, the wind
everything will subside." Vangie tells him. "If he comes through in time and if she
was really serious about wanting to help me." "I know she was sincere. Tim what you
need is faith." "And money. Seventy
five hundred dollars, a lot of money for Mr.Desmond to hand over to a guy he
hardly knows to exist."
Back
at Maljardin Alison is staring out the open window. She is still upset. "Doctor." Raxl calls from the stairs;
"Yes Raxl." "Have you spoken to
Msieu Desmond about leaving?" "No,
I can't find him. I thought he was down at the docks, but it's hard to see
through that window." "He's not
down at the boat. I just came from there."
"Oh well, where's Quito? Perhaps he can take me to the Mainland." "No one leaves this Island without the
Master's permission." Alison starts
wandering around the room. "I'm beginning to feel like a prisoner in here!" "I fear we are all captives. From an
evil force." Raxl walks away and heads up the staircase.
"
There is an evil feeling in here. We must fight against it." Vangie tells
Tim. "Do you really have that
feeling?" "Right down to my bones."
Vangie tells him. "Look, why do you
feel you have to act?" Tim asks.
"My cards tell. I'm not sure I can handle it this time." Vangie says
looking straight ahead.
Reverend Matt Dawson is knocking on the dorm room at Wesley House.
After fanning away cigarette smoke Dinah opens the door. "May I come in?" asks the Reverend. Letting him in she says. "She isn't
here." "I can see that. Do you know
where she is?" "Why? Has she
split?" "You know very well she
did, why don't you stop putting me on,” the Reverend tells her. "I don't know. I don't have the
slightest idea where she is." She walks away from the Reverend to brush her
hair, bopping to music she is humming.
"Dinah, I admire your loyalty but there are times when it can hurt Holly
instead of helping her." "And this
is one of those times?" The
Reverend nods. "Before she gets herself into real trouble. I have always tried
to be fair to you and Holly, all the girls here. Why don't you level with me?”
Dinah is still playing with her hair.
"Where is she?" "You
really have a thing for her don't you Reverend? Come on. She knows it, so do
most of the kids. It's as obvious as a psychedelic poster, she says with a
smile. "All right Dinah, cool it. "
he says angrily. "Just tell me how to find Holly?" "Why? So you can lug her back." "So I can help her. If I ever done you
one good turn, made you comfortable here."
"Look! All I know is she's flying south like the birds." she says waving
her hands. Way down south. The tickets cost sixty-five." Dinah says picking up a
giant stuffed animal and hugging it.
Where did she get that kind of money?" "Saved some, and we all pitched in with
the rest. To help her get away from her vampire mother." "Is that all you know?" "You have my word." "Thanks, I'll find out the rest,” he
says as he heads to the door.
Holly
arrives on the Mainland. Entering the cafe she looks around. Going to the bar
she tries to order a drink. Tim stops the bartender. When Holly asks why, he
tells her she is not old enough for the bar scene. "Are you reading my birth certificate,
little man?" "If you have one to
show you will get an apology and a drink." Tim tells her leaning on the
bar. "Come on. I'm here, your here,
the liquors here. What's the holdup?"
Tim stares at her. "Well,
what are you the manager or something?" Holly asks. "Hold on a minute." Tim walks away to
Vangie's table. "The kid wants a drink." Tim tells her while sitting down. "That's Joes department." Vangie
replies. "She's underage, she
practically admitted it." "Ask the
management." "No one is here, the
kid's scared." "I can see that.
She's alone and frightened." says Vangie.
"It's in the cards?" Tim asks.
"More than that. Some good, some bad. There are riches for her but she
faces the threat of death." Vangie says turning over her tarot
cards.
Alison is pacing around the dining room. The storm is still
continuing. "It has never happened
before. I can not find Msieu Desmond anywhere." Raxl says sounding upset. "I hope nothing has happened to
him." "After the curse on the house
I would not be surprised." Raxl says as she rushes
away.
Back
at the cafe Holly picks up her bag. "Okay you won your point. Can I at least get
a room at this yacht club or whatever it is?" She shoves her way past Tim. "Sure if you can afford it." "I can afford it, I have the bread."
Holly tells him. "Come on, cheer
up. Vangie reads fortunes, she says you are going to be rich." Tim says standing
next to Vangie. "I'm going to be
more than that, I'm going to be happy." Holly tries to storm away. Tim grabs her elbow. "Come on." Tim then turns to Vangie.
"Vangie?" "Oh hi." Vangie
answers. "Thank you for telling my
fortune." "What's your name?" Holly looks away then shrugs. "Holly
Marshal." "It's a pretty name."
Vangie tells her. "Pretty girl."
Tim adds. "You’re going to tell my
future with those?" Holly asks.
"Tarot cards are not a toy." Vangie replies. "Vangie is really hung up on the fortune
telling bit. She believes in it, believe me." Tim tells Holly. "What are you running from Holly? And
who is the man running after you?" Vangie asks while holding a tarot card. After Holly leaves she asks Tim.
"Does the death card point to Holly or another woman, whoever she is?" Reverend Dawson finds out Holly stopped
at Port French Leaf. The Reverend is packed and ready to leave when Mrs. Marshal
stops him. She questions him about Holly's whereabouts. "I have an idea, yes." "I knew that girl was lying to me. All I
want is information about my daughter.
"Very well, all Holly's friend Dinah told me was Holly was heading south.
I got the rest of my information from other sources." "What part of the south Reverend? Tell
me." "I'm afraid not Mrs. Marshal."
the Reverend tells her. "What do
you mean?" "Exactly what I meant
the last time we spoke. Holly has to find herself. You must give her the
opportunity to do so. I made a mistake helping you to put Holly away in Wesley
House. I want to correct it if I can." "By leaving?" "In order to help Holly,
yes." With a sigh Elizabeth looks
at the Reverend. "You're following her. You’re a man of God. How can you?" With a smile he replies. "God is
everywhere Mrs. Marshal, he will be everywhere I am." "And if you find her?" "I'll try to bring her home again." "To Wesley House?" "She doesn't belong there!" the Reverend
tells her. "Perhaps you are right.
Perhaps I should permit her to come home with me." Elizabeth says. "I don't think your house is the right
place either. What disturbs Holly is you."
"How dare you! She's my daughter. I demand to know where she is!" "If I find her, if she wants you to
know, I'll let you know. But I'll let her make that decision." "If you don't tell me, I will go to the
police. And let me remind you Reverend Dawson, Holly is still a minor." With a smile the Reverend tells her.
"Thank you for the warning. I've come to expect your obvious allusions." "I think you would be ashamed. Running
after a young girl. I'll fix you Reverend Dawson and I'll fix Holly too. I have
enough influence to get what I want. And you nor my daughter will be able to
stand in the way of it." Elizabeth then walks away. The Reverend picks up his suitcase and
walks out the door.
At Maljardin it is still thundering and lightning. Raxl
slowly walks down the staircase. Alison is sleeping in a chair. Raxl wakes her
and tells her she should eat something. "No thank you Raxl. I don't think
I could keep it down, the way I feel." Alison stands and walks to the fireplace.
"Oh Raxl, What's happening? I pray I have the strength to stand up to it," she
says leaning on the fireplace with her head laying against it. Walking slowly
across the room she pulls herself up the banister of the staircase, going to her
room.
