Episode 9:
Slideshow
Jean
Paul is pacing in his secret room. He is listening to a tape he had made to
Erica. He tells her he is going to the Mainland to pick up the artist that is
going to paint her portrait. He turns on the monitor; he can see the Great Hall.
Jean Paul records another message to Erica. "My darling I have to go, Quito is
waiting. Sleep well my love. I love you and need you." On the monitor Jean Paul
watches Quito waiting for him in the Great Hall.
Reverend Dawson stops at North Ridge to see Elizabeth. "My needs do not include your advice
Reverend Dawson." "It's for your
own good and your daughters."
"Holly of course. I don't intend to get drawn into that argument again. I
imagined by now you would have been well on your way to finding her." Elizabeth
tells him. "I have taken a leave of
absence for that very purpose,” the Reverend says. "To run after a runaway, or has Holly
taken a leave of absence too."
"Holly’s leave should be permanent Mrs. Marshal, she didn't belong at
Wesley House." "As her mother I am
a better judge of that. I know my daughter, I lived with her faults and I am
aware of the steps to correct them." she tells him. "But an institute is a poor excuse for a
mother's love. She needs love and understanding." Elizabeth asks him about his needs.
Telling him Holly is still legally a minor. She reminds him that he is still a
man of God. "I do remember Mrs.
Marshal. I wish you would. Then perhaps the two of us can help Holly instead of
continuing to hurt her." "How about
Holly's mothers needs, must I continue to be hurt." Elizabeth tells
him.
Jean Paul walks down the staircase looking for Quito. Quito
meets him in the Great Hall and hands him the documents. He points to the
signature. Jean Paul glances up at
the portrait of Jacques. "Quito I have no time for this at the moment." Jean
Paul folds the documents back up. "Where is Raxl? She knows we are leaving for
the Mainland soon." He slides the papers into his jacket. "I can't possibly
leave Erica alone in the cryonics capsule without being absolutely certain the
gauges will be carefully checked. That was the one point Dr. Patton emphasized
very clearly. Doctor Carr is too distressed to lend a hand. We must find Raxl,”
he signals Quito to leave. As Jean
Paul pours himself a drink Jacques speaks to him. "It's enough to drive a man to
drink, the competence of household help."
"Must you be everywhere?" Jean Paul turns toward the portrait getting
upset. "I've been blessed with the
powers or should I say cursed with it. Why let it go to waste." Jean Paul clutches his temple. "Look!"
he takes his hand from his head and points his finger at Jacques portrait. "Why
do you try to make me believe you and I are one? Perhaps I am one with you or
perhaps I am a devil as Raxl says you are. Whatever your strange power is that
forces me to loose control over myself and commit inadvertent actions. I beg you
please, please do not put in jeopardy the cryonics process or the ultimate
return of my darling Erica to these arms where she belongs." "Then mums the word about her before
everyone on the Mainland thinks you have bats in your belfry. Now just do as I
say and she will be back in your arms." Jacques tells him. "And if I don't?" "Then she won't" "All right! If I cut you to pieces will
I be free then?" Jean Paul shakes his finger at him as he asks. "Who knows but if you do you just might
cut your dear sweet Erica from you. The choice is yours. But I do promise you
this I won't bleed." Jacques tells him.
"Raxl is right!" Jean Paul states.
"I'm the devil? As you yourself said maybe you are too. Now, how does
that saying go? As thick as thieves."
Reverend Dawson and Elizabeth talk about the death of
Holly's father. "Don't you honestly believe his death contributed to her
defiance of you?" "Reverend, she is
defiant, which is why I put her in Wesley House in the first place. And why I
intend to return her there as soon as I find her." On the Mainland Vangie is sitting at a
table in the cafe looking at the tarot cards when Tim comes up asking if she has
seen Holly. "Look all I was trying
to do was create a friendly and informal atmosphere for a guest." Tim tells
Vangie. "Friend is the key word
Tim, the cards seem to be stacked against her. The nine of swords. Holly is
going to need every friend she can find."
"Need every friend?" Tim asks.
"The cards keep giving the same kind of warning. Tim, did you ever hear
of E.S.P.?" "Extra sensory
perception. Sure." "Look, if I had
five concealed cards what would the average for guessing one card correctly?"
Vangie asks. Tim tells her he
doesn't know. "One of five, five of
twenty-five. Anything above that is no longer chance. What would you guess my
average is?" "More?" Tim says. "Thirteen." "Thirteen out of twenty-five! Hey you’re
breaking the law." Vangie picks up
the card in the center. "The nine of swords or spades as you would call it, is
the card of death. Why does it always turn up with Holly every time I deal the
deck?"
Elizabeth asks the Reverend once again to tell her where
Holly is. "If she wants you to know
she will tell you." "I warn you,
I'll even the score for helping her to defy me." Elizabeth tells the
Reverend. "Mrs. Marshal
vindictiveness is not vindication. Holly ran away from you not to you! When will
you ever try to realize why! " the Reverend says looking up at her from his
chair. Elizabeth is standing
and turns away. "I begin to realize why you helped her to run. Suddenly a child
seemed like a woman to you. A child who is going to be very rich, very soon. A
child who knows how to twist men around her little finger. I should know, I lost
a husband to her,” she says walking away.
The Reverend comes to his feet and stands behind her. "You lost your
husband to God Mrs. Marshal. And perhaps your daughter too, to the Lord's
will." "Or to the devil." Elizabeth
answers.
Quito
is standing staring at Jacques portrait when Jean Paul comes in the doorway.
Quito turns and walks toward Jean Paul.
Jean Paul has a briefcase in his hand. Looking at Quito he tells him. "I
was wrong about Raxl, she was with my wife all the while." Jean Paul smiles.
Looking at his watch he tells Quito they should go now. Jean Paul sets the
briefcase down on a table; Quito picks it up and carries it out the
door.
Holly walks up to Vangie and Tim. "Still with the cards I
see." "Yea. Vangie does tricks with
them." Tim tells her. "Not from
what I heard. How about reading my future Vangie?" Holly asks. Vangie collects the cards, telling Holly
not now. As she leaves the table she tells them she has other things she must
do. Holly and Tim look at each
other, then away in the direction Vangie headed. "Did I speak out of turn?" Holly
asks. "Forget it." Tim glances down
at his sketchpad. "Why the freeze?
Holly asks walking around the chair to Tim's side. "Would you mind some advice? Just cool
it." Tim says. "Sure, life is to
short anyway." Holly says as she starts taking a seat across from Tim. Noticing
Tim's sketches she takes them. "Hey, these are really good." Holly picks up a
sketch of the thug that is after Tim. She asks him who he is since she has seen
him around. "Just a guy." Tim says
not looking at Holly. "Wow, two
sudden freezes in less than a minute. Look clue me in, I'm curious." "Well you forget him." Tim tells
her. "It sounds like you would like
to. What is it about this guy that bugs you so much?" "You wouldn't understand." "Look Tim, I have a very high IQ and a
very low boiling point..." "Okay,
okay. He's a collector." "But not
of pictures. Tim, do you have a habit?" Tim laughs sarcastically. "All I
got is a debt." "Oh, he's looking
for the payoff." "Which he is going
to get I hope." Tim then asks her what her story is. She tells him she is running from her
mother. Tim explains why the thug
is after him. "A loan shark!" "I was broke and my mother's disease was
incurable, all I hoped to do was make her more comfortable. The hospital was
very expensive." "Tim, what are you
going to do?" "Pay him off." "Are you coming into an inheritance?"
she asks. "That would be luck and
I'm not lucky,” he answers. Holly
tells him she is going to be rich soon but it still doesn't bring her happiness.
" That's my problem. What are you going to do about yours?" "Have you ever heard of Jean Paul
Desmond?" "Down here. That's all I
hear about. He's some kind off rich kook isn't he?" "Well let's hope not to kooky. There is
this big Island across the channel."
"I've heard about that too, Maljardin." "Well with about half the world, Jean
Paul owns it. He has a beautiful wife who has a beautiful sister that promised
me she would get him to allow me to do a portrait of Mrs. Desmond, for
seventy-five hundred smackeroos." Tim doesn't look happy. "Oh Tim, that's cool. Don't you dig
it?" "Well I'll believe it when I
see it." "I'll have my fingers
crossed for you." Holly tells him while showing him her hands. "Now that I dig." Tim says with a smile.
Looking up. "Oh Holly, Jean Paul Desmond " he says quietly. Jean Paul, Vangie and Quito walk in
together. "Wait here Quito." Jean Paul tells him. Jean Paul and Vangie walk up to the bar
Jean Paul turns to Vangie. "Why do you imagine there is anything wrong at
Maljardin?" "The cards have been
speaking to me again." Jean Paul
orders a drink. "You know you amaze me. You are still clinging to those old
superstitions." "Nine of swords
still chill my nerve ends." Vangie tells him. "Yes that's the card of death isn't that
what you told me?" "It keeps
turning up in connection with those around you." Vangie says. Jean Paul turns
away from Vangie looking down at the bar.
"And after what happened to Dr. Menkin..." "How did you hear about that?" Jean Paul
asks. "Quito brought his body
across yesterday. Everyone knows."
"Of course." Jean Paul says looking down at his hands. "I guess now you will be leaving the
Island." Vangie says. "Why should
I?" Jean Paul asks looking up at Vangie.
"With your wife in her last months of pregnancy she should not be so far
from a doctor." "She isn't, her
sister is with her. She's a doctor. Now Tim Stanton?" Jean Paul asks while
reading his reading the name from a slip of paper. "Over there." Vangie points him
out. Jean Paul turns to look.
Turning back he picks up his drink. "Are you sure the club won't mind losing him
for a while?" "Unless you
commission a portrait we are going to loose him for good." "Oh the visiting Mafia leave it to me.
I'll give Stanton the money and leave him pay them. I'll just finish this drink
and have a few words with him."
"Your wife will love his work." Vangie says with a smile. "Will she?" Jean Paul says with a
serious _expression.
Holly ordered a cola drink. When she gets it she gives a
toast. "To the establishment." "Are
you kidding.”? Tim laughs. He looks at Jean Paul. "That guys not budging. I hope
he isn't going to change his mind."
"He won't. What am I going to do while your over there painting that
picture? I'll miss you." Holly tells him. She mentions she is worried about
paying for her room. "Maybe I can
get Vangie to advance you some credit." Tim tells her. "Maybe I can do odd jobs." Holly
says. "Your to frail and pretty."
Tim looks back at Jean Paul. "I hope nothing is the matter. Mr. Desmond doesn't
seem too happy." "For a guy that
has everything he seems to have a lot of problems." Holly says, "That's what
worries me." Jean Paul walks up to
their table. "Tim Stanton?"
Tim stands. "Yes sir." They shake hands. Reaching into his jacket Jean Paul hands
Tim money. "Seventy-five hundred dollars, this will get your...creditors off
your neck." "It's an awful lot of
money sir, I hope I can earn it." Tim tells him. "If you happen to need anymore let me
know." "How can I thank you? Tim
asks. "Bring my wife to life." Jean
Paul says. "I'll do my best." "Good, now Quito and I are going in for
the mail and supplies here on this Island. We will return and meet you at five
o’clock." Jean Paul looks at his watch. "Then we will leave for our Island. Oh,
bring a bag. You may be staying for a long time." Jean Paul turns and heads out
the door with Quito. "Didn't I say
not to worry.”? Holly tells Tim as he sits back down. "Yea, I guess. He's nice isn't he?" "Dreamy, but strange." Holly
replies. "How do you mean?" "I don't know. Just the way he talks
about that wife he loves so much. I don't know how to say it." "I do, but I'm going to count my
blessings and pack my bags." Tim says as he stands to leave. "Tim, have a ball." Holly says with a
smile. "You too." Tim grins then
walks out. "Holly." Vangie calls to
her. "Tim put in the word for you. Your not an artist, your not a general
utility man but we will find something for you to do." Holly finishes her drink, stands and
walks into Reverend Dawson. "How did you find out? Why don't you leave me
alone!" Holly cries out. Carrying
his supplies and bag Tim turns to Jean Paul. "I'm ready sir." "I'm very sorry. I'm afraid Quito,
he's my servant had to take the boat back to our Island first. There was an
urgent message for my housekeeper. But when he returns we will leave." Jean Paul
tells him. Jean Paul turns away from Tim.
"Excuse me sir. Will your wife want to sit for me today?" Tim asks. Jean Paul just stares ahead not
answering.
Quito arrives on Maljardin, he goes to the
crypt.
