The storm continues on Maljardin as Vangie walks down the
staircase. Holly, Elizabeth and Matt are standing and talking at the bottom of
the steps. They are discussing the locket.
"Absolutely like witchcraft." Elizabeth says to them. "Things just don't suddenly appear out
of the blue." Holly says. Vangie
joins them. "Evils and disasters, signs and portents. And a feeling, a presence.
But what presence is here?" Vangie asks walking over to the repaired séance
table. "We must reach past them to find the truth." "Vangie, you're not going to have the
séance now?" Holly asks as she walks over to the séance table. "Jean Paul can not wait. The need is
urgent. The need to find out whence this locket came." Vangie says taking the
locket out of a box she had carried to the table. "I must choose those of you
who will help Jean Paul Desmond contact his wife Erica." Holly shakes her head. "Not me." "You if the spirits choose." Vangie
tells her. Dan rushes down the
staircase. "Where's Jean Paul, does anyone know?" "He's in his room." Matt tells him. "For the first time I've seen him unsure
and distraught. He's almost mad." Elizabeth tells them. "Well he shouldn't be left alone." Dan
says. "Alison's with him trying to
calm him." says Matt. Holly looks
at Vangie. "Surely you have to have Jean Paul for the séance." "He will be present. There is much he
must hear from his wife about this locket. And about the black rabbit that so
mysteriously appeared with it." Vangie says holding the locket in the palm of
her hand. "His trembling hand placed it in mine. And only his dead wife can tell
us if this is the locket that was sealed with her." "If it is. How did it suddenly appear
around that animals neck?" Dan asks walking over to Vangie. "You should ask Raxl that , she is the
one who said it did." Holly tells him.
"A locket strained with blood from a live rabbit or a dead woman?" Matt
asks. "Does he really believe that
locket was around his wife's neck before she was buried?" Elizabeth asks. "Then someone opened the cryo capsule
and removed it." Dan says to them.
"It was checked, nothing was touched." says Matt. "It could have been closed again." says
Dan. "It's watched by Quito and
Raxl all the time." Elizabeth tells them.
"Maybe Raxl did it. She wanted to kill the rabbit. She said it was evil,
to Raxl everything is evil." says Holly hugging her shoulders with her arms
crossed. "Where is the rabbit
now." "Jean Paul has the
black rabbit. Which could not possibly survive on this poisonous Island. And yet
it is here now." Vangie says as she takes a seat at the séance table. She lights
the candles on the table. "It well may contain the spirit of one deeply
loved." "Now she's talking about
reincarnation." Matt says looking at Vangie. "Well that lockets real enough and so is
the blood on it. If that locket was sealed away by Jean Paul with Erica, it's
Erica's blood." Dan says to Matt.
"But she died from Eclampsia, and what I'm told there's no blood." Matt
says. "You're told, I'm told
suppose it wasn't Eclampsia." says Dan.
"You mean murder?" Matt asks.
"It did cross my mind."
Elizabeth is listening to their discussion. "I don't know what to make of
all this." "How did Doctor Menkin
die? We don't know that either. Dan says.
"What are you implying now?" asks Matt. "Perhaps Doctor Menkin died because he
knew how Erica died. I'm getting off this Island. I'm going to bring the police
into this." Dan says turning away.
"But Dan crossing that treacherous channel is sure death." Matt says
grabbing Dan's arm. "So is staying
here." "Some must be chosen to join
the circle, please take your seats at the table." Vangie tells everyone. They
glance at each other. "Sit! There's a presence here all ready! Please!" Vangie
says to them. Matt and Elizabeth
sit. Holly follows . Dan reaches over his chair with his hands on the table
looking at Matt. "You're a minister, how much more of this are you going to
stand?" "You! Go, please!" Vangie
tells Dan. "Don't worry, I will!"
Dan says angrily as he turns and rushes up the staircase. Vangie raises her hand to her head.
"Conjure Man, Conjure Man who is there?" Vangie asks lowering her hand. "Who's
there now?" Vangie asks as she looks down at the locket. "Out! Out! Let me out!
Out!" Vangie yells. Holly jumps up. "No, no you stay! You keep the contact!"
Vangie says pointing at Holly. "Out! Out! Get me out!" Vangie cries. Holly runs
off up the staircase. Vangie lowers her hand, blinks and looks at Matt. "Where's
Holly?" "She couldn't stand it. I
don't think I can either. Or any of us." Elizabeth says frightened. "Two spirits, one is so angry. So
confined in some place in some fog." Vangie says to them. I'm getting something to drink."
Elizabeth says standing and walking away from the table. "What brings this danger? Some savage
murdering force!" Vangie cries out. she stands and walks over to Jacques
portrait. "Is it you wicked Jacques Eloi Des Mondes. You have always been an
enemy. You would laugh at my clouded sight. Are you the answer?" She turns away
from the portrait. "A force not so much evil as angry. Horribly angry and
confined." Elizabeth walks back
with a glass and decanter. "Here's some wine Miss Abbott." "Not now." says Vangie. Elizabeth starts to place it on the
séance table. "Not there. The
spirits may not cross it." says Vangie.
"Another spirit?" Elizabeth asks.
"Stronger than that of even the Conjure Man." "I think it is a hallucination."
Elizabeth tells her. She walks away with the wine. "Why does Jean Paul not come, the time
of the apex is passing and the forces of danger increases!" Vangie cries
out. Elizabeth puts the decanter
down on a table near the séance table. Vangie picks up the locket. "Is the
secret locked in here?" Vangie asks holding the locket up. Elizabeth walks next to Vangie and
glances at the locket. "It's beautiful except for the blood." Vangie looks away from Elizabeth. "Is
the answer here? Is it in the blood or within the locket?" Elizabeth looks nervously at the
staircase. "I wish Jean Paul would come, then we can open it." "No Mrs. Marshal I made a mistake when I
asked you to join the séance. I need all the help I can get but yours will
disrupt." "How dare you! I will not
be ordered around!" Elizabeth tells Vangie. "Anger! Anger, you bring anger!" says
Vangie. Elizabeth turns and leaves.
Holly is in her room laying on her bed when her mother walks into
the room. Elizabeth paces back and forth. Holly sits up. "Mother what on earth
is the matter now?" "Oh that woman
Vangie Abbott!" yells Elizabeth.
"What?" asks Holly. "Oh
never mind. Holly I no longer trust these people. I no longer trust Jean
Paul." "Now you too have seen how
he's changed." says Holly. "It's an
awesome feeling Holly, we may really grow old here. Spending all our lives while
that woman down in that crypt stays frozen and young forever. Oh I'm angry,
we've got to get off this Island. I realize that now." Elizabeth says looking at
Holly. "I thought you were content
here?" "That's all past history,
I'll tell you the truth Holly. At first I didn't take these things seriously but
now..." Elizabeth says sitting on the edge of Holly's bed. "What?" Elizabeth stands. "I'm frightened Holly,
really frightened."
Matt and Vangie are
sitting at the séance table. Vangie has her hands at her temples gazing across
the table. Matt is sitting on her right side. "Vangie surely you must have some
sensitivity of what your doing. About what you are causing us to feel and
fear." "No distractions, not now."
says Vangie lowering her hands. "Where is Holly? Where is Alison? I must have
Alison. and Jean Paul, why doesn't he come? Dan Forrest plans to use violence.
He acts against Jean Paul. Distraction! Distraction, Dan Forrest will go to
destruction and Jean Paul's mind and body will hang in balance by acts of the
devil!" Matt sits down and listens
to Vangie. "Or someone posing as the devil!" he says. Vangie looks at Matt. "You suspect
me?" "Or Raxl or almost anyone
here!" Vangie looks around.
"Distraction! distraction! Dan Forrest is an imposing influence." "He wants to help." Matt tells her. "You
do too, don't you?" "Yes but the
feeling is so intense. I'm driven by it. The need, the urgency, that locket,
that blood." "If they were points
of contact with a stronger spirit of some sort. Not that I believe Vangie." "But you yourself were a point of
contact." says Vangie. "Me,
how?" "You are a man of God, a
believer in the afterlife. Reverend the afterlife is here in this room and you
and that locket helped to bring it here."
"If the locket brings someone, who?" "That may never be answered. But as long
as we don't resist the spirits, as long as we let them in. Oh why does it make
the contact? Or is it the locket?" Vangie asks. "It's some kind of wild speculation.
That's all it is Vangie. It may be for only Jean Paul himself to answer." "Jean Paul doesn't know." says
Vangie. "Perhaps he does." "No, no there's something else here.
That locket came from Erica Desmond's cryo capsule. To Jean Paul's hand to my
hand through his order to this table. Now who or what follows it?" Vangie asks
holding the locket. "Erica Desmond herself?"
Elizabeth is still pacing in Holly's room. "Oh it's impossible to
maintain ones composure. I was reasonably certain of Jean Paul at one time, but
now I..." "Mother, do you think
there is any truth in any of these things." "Do you mean do I think Erica Desmond
has come back as a rabbit? What concerns me is that Jean Paul thinks so." "Oh that changes your plans does it?"
Holly says. "Yes. Holly we need
each other. If only to exchange notes. No I don't think Erica's spirit has come
back in the form of a rabbit. But what Jean Paul thinks affects us all.
Especially if he thinks that locket came from Erica by some sort of magic." "Or witchcraft. Well I tried to look for
a way out, so has Tim Stanton but no luck." Holly tells her mother. "Dan Forrest will find a way , and I
think it must be now or never." Elizabeth says to Holly. "Do you think Mr. Desmond will get
worse? Stranger?" Holly asks.
"Don't you?" Elizabeth asks turning towards Holly. "It may be prudent to
watch him very closely. We have to know what he's doing! I think you should go
down to that séance since you're invited."
"What? Mother you know what almost happened last time when the chandelier
fell. Somebody could have been killed."
"Holly it wasn't brought down by spirits." "Someone real?" Holly asks
quietly.
Dan walks down the staircase. Vangie is talking to Matt. "The
feeling is so strong, the time is so near it's getting difficult now to hold
back." "I'm going to make my move
now." Dan tells them. Matt hops up.
"Dan! Quito will tear you to pieces if you go near the boat house!" "I wonder if I would be Quito’s first?"
Dan looks around. "Jean Paul may not be in this room, but he may just as well
be. Do you hear me Jean Paul!" Dan shouts.
"Oh for heavens sake Dan are you inviting him to act upon you?" "No just acknowledging the facts of the
situation. His mind is preoccupied with this latest madness of a black rabbit
and a blood stained locket. If he's going to act against one of us, why not now
when we are prepared for it." says Dan.
"You're no more secure in your feeling and faith then the rest of us."
Matt tells him. "Perhaps not, but
I'm going to get out of here, and off this Island. And I'll get back here with
the police and open the cryo capsule and perhaps find Erica Desmond with her
throat cut!"
Holly stands and walks over to her mother. "I really haven't got
the nerve." "Oh you have shown
plenty of courage before Holly. You went down into that crypt to find a way out.
You defied Quito when he was ordered to kill the black rabbit." "I was angry then. I'm not angry now,
I'm just terribly frightened." says Holly.
"Oh the rabbit and locket business is just to much!" Elizabeth says. "I wonder if the Jean Paul we know ever
existed. We have to know Holly. You have to go down to that
séance."
Vangie and Matt are sitting at the séance table, Dan joins them,
"Where is this going to lead us next, supposing she decides that locket is the
real thing?" Dan asks. "But it is.
Jean Paul has identified it." Vangie says to him. "All right so Erica in the séance tells
him so. Is that going to make him happier and easier to get along with?" Dan
asks. "But if the black rabbit is
evil as Raxl so firmly believes then the transference can only be an act of
evil." says Vangie. "Do you see
what we have to put up with? Dan tells Matt. "Dan, I know this seems hard to endure
but Jean Paul has been changed by the happenings here. We all suffer from the
influence." "I'm only subject in as
much as I am trapped here. There's only one thing left to do." "No Dan!" "Yes, they can't guard the boat house
all the time. They don't even try to."
"You can not navigate that channel! If you try you'll die." "Is that so. Do you know anything about
navigation Matt?" "I know about the
human soul, and I know yours is pushed beyond the realm of all caution and
reason." Vangie listens to their
conversation. "I can get one of
those boats to work. I'll get out of here and across that channel. And I don't
care who know it!" Dan says angrily as he stands. Holly is walking down the staircase, she
walks across the room to the séance table. "Well I'm here. What do I have to
do." "We can't do anything until
Jean Paul arrives. Perhaps Alison is getting to him." Matt says. "If they really are talking about Jean
Paul's mental condition." Dan says.
"Sit down please Holly." Vangie says. Holly and Dan take a seat. "See
even your presence brings the senses closer to the power and contact we seek.
Reverend Dawson, please quickly he's coming." Vangie says. "Jean Paul?" "Yes but something else to. I feel it
closely. Everything will be right , I sense it." "We will do our best." Matt says. "Holly
you must try when we begin." "What
do I have to do?" asks Holly.
"Cleanse your mind of all thoughts but that of the one Jean Paul loves so
dearly that I must now contact.' Vangie tells Holly. "I'll try to think only of her." Holly
says closing her eyes.
"Distraction! Distraction! Dan Forrest, please leave us! I can not
concentrate against your anger." Vangie says. Dan stands. "Then I should stay." "Anger brings anger! There was anger
here before, please go!" "My
pleasure." Dan says angrily as he leaves the table. "Conjure Man, Conjure man are you with
us again? Why, Conjure Man? Why? There is a message here, a warning. I can not
bring it through. The path must be clear. What is the warning Conjure Man?" Matt and Holly watch Vangie. "Gone, the
conjure Man is gone. Rage! Rage! Rage! Let me out! Out! Out! Out! Out! Out!"
Vangie cries. "Is she here yet?"
Holly asks. "Jean Paul! Jean Paul!"
Vangie screams for him. "Out! Out!
Let me out!" Holly start crying out. She then screams. Matt and Dan grab her. She struggles to
free herself, then she stops. Matt
tells Dan to get Holly a drink as he holds Holly. Dan picks up the wine that
Elizabeth had left on the table.
"Holly drink this." Dan says. He then holds the glass as Holly drinks
it. "The spirit will come to one of
us somehow." Vangie says as she stands.
Holly grabs her throat and collapses. "Holly!" Matt calls. The others gather
around her. Dan tells them they have to get Alison quickly. He picks up Holly's
wine glass and smells it. "If the missing cyanide was in this I'm afraid Holly
is dead!"
