William Baker & Jane Wood
|
Whoever said "seek and ye shall find" was NOT a
genealogist!
William Baker was a convict, but as to which William Baker convict, I am still yet to determine.
Who said genealogy wasn't a challenge! From information I currently have I have narrowed him down to
about three prospective candidates - William per Morley 1817, William per Morley 1818, and
William per Baring 1819. Many family members suspect he was William Baker who arrived in Sydney
aboard the Morley on 10 April 1817, after being charged at the Middlesex Gaol Delivery on 3 April
1816 for stealing a mare. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was at some stage commuted to
transportation for life. On the convict indent for the Morley William was listed as 20 years of age,
his native place was Hertford, and his occupation was labourer.
Jane Wood was also a convict, and has been a lot easier to trace. She along with Ann Gardiner and 78
other women, arrived in Sydney Cove on 27 September 1827 aboard the Transport Ship Harmony. The
Harmony was a vessle of 373 tons burden, built at St John, Newfoundland, and was on her maiden
voyage with Captain Richard D. Middleton in charge, leaving the London Docks on 4 June 1827. On the convict
indent for the Harmony Jane was listed as 15 years of age, her native place Birmingham, and her
occupation was a nurse girl. Jane was aged 14 when she was tried on 16 October 1826 at Warwick, with two
others Ann Gardiner and Elizabeth Appleyard, Jane and Ann for stealing 9 shirts value £1-16s-0d, 4 shifts
value 8s-0d, 1 petticoat value 1s-0d, and 1 Fan value 2s-0d, the property of William Elliott. Elizabeth
Appleyard for receiving two of the shirts knowing them to have been stolen. Jane Wood and Ann Gardiner
each pleaded 'not guilty', but all three were found guilty and their sentence - each of them to be
transported to such a place beyond the seas as His Majesty with the advice of his Privy Council shall
direct and appoint for the term of seven years. It is interesting to note that a William Elliott was
a juror. One cannot help wondering if this William Elliott was also the plaintiff and if so, whether
justice was really done!
Jane's liaison with William Baker took place sometime before 1 March 1831, as this was when their
first child Ellen was born in Ryde. William and Jane eventually married on 1 Jan 1851, by which time
they had had ten of their twelve children. One can only speculate as to the possible reasons as to why
the delay, perhaps William was previously married, perhaps they had been refused permission to marry
by the Governor. Being convicts, they had to make application to the Governor for permission to marry.
This requirement was phased out around 1851.
William died on June 5th 1866, aged 74 years, and was buried at St Anne's, Ryde. Jane died on 11
Nov 1882 aged 70 years, and was buried at St John's Gordon, Lane Cove.
