Charles William Bryant born c.1818 Stroud Water, Glocestershire, England, was the son of William and June Bryant (nee) Radcliffe. William and June were married on 3rd February 1811 at Saint Augustine the Less, Bristol, Glocestershire. At this point in time nothing further is known of Charles' parents or possible siblings.

Charles arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia around 1834 and is believed to have been a butcher and possibly a hotel-keeper. Charles firstly married Charlotte Stevens in 1839 in NSW and their first two children were born in Brisbane Water NSW, Charles W in 1840 and Matilda Mazetta in 1842. It is not known how long the family remained in the Brisbane Water area, however I next find them in Hinton in 1846 where they remained until at least 1852 when the twins Sophia C and Eliza H were born. The family disappears until I find Charles in the Beechworth, VIC, area in 1855.

Charles and Charlotte's daughter Matilda Mazetta also appears in Beechworth when in 1857 she married Francis Bovey Nicholls. Their first three children Francis b.1858, Francis b.1860 and Matilda b.1861 were born in Indigo. By 1864 they had moved to Forbes, NSW, and then in 1875 to Parkes, NSW, where they remained.

Charles married secondly Johanna O'BRIEN in 1857 in Beechworth VIC. According to information given at the time of his second Marriage, Charles had been widowed in Aug 1856 and had 4 living children and 1 deceased child. Johanna born c.1832 Co. Tipperary, Ireland, was the daughter of Patrick and Margaret O'Brien (nee Ryan). Click here for further information regarding the O'Brien family.

Charles and Johanna settled on their farm in the Indigo Valley near Barnawartha, where Charles was a miner, butcher and a farmer. They had the following children Cyrus Patrick b.1859, Denis George b.1860, Margaret Jane b.1861, George Thomas b.1863, Margaret Jane b.1865, William b.1867, William Radcliffe b.1868, Johanna Maria b.1870, Daniel Joseph b.1873, John Denis b. 1873.

William Radcliffe married Selina Schroeter in Albury in 1895 and they settled in the Chiltern area, Johanna married Joseph Cheesley in 1892 and they initially settled in Barnawartha, Daniel married Elizabeth Adolphina Jacobsen in 1903 and they initially settled in Beechworth, and John Dennis married Catherine Margaret Anderson in 1905 in Quirindi, NSW.

Charles died in Barnawartha in 1898 and Johanna died in Chiltern in 1904.
