Method: The first thing I did was to look for pertinent articles in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism in the General Reference area, the relevant reference work in my category. I looked at four articles, and found nothing useful other than background information on Missionaries or the Church in the area. I then looked at the other BX 8600 books that were next to the Encyclopedia, The Prophets Have Spoken, which contained a reference in the index to "Missionaries-deaths of," which all turned out to be from natural causes. I also noticed an index to Flake's "A Mormon Bibliography" (1830-1930), which contained a reference to the "Tennessee Massacre and its Causes." That was it in the General Reference Area. I then went upstairs to the BX 8600s, and by the chart on the aisle, could see that my information would be found in the tens groupings of the BX 8600s and the BX 8670s. I looked on the shelves, examining a book's contents and index to ascertain its usefulness in my report. I found the Bibliography indexed in the General Reference area, which referred to a lecture given by John Nicholson on the Tennessee murders, and is available in Special Collections and on microfiche. I also noticed a book on the Joseph Standing murder in the biography section, also written by John Nicholson while he was in prison on polygamy charges. I then thought of looking at biographies of B. H. Roberts, who I knew had been serving in Tennessee at the time of the murders. I looked at Truman Madsen's biography, who committed most of a chapter to the event, and included abundant endnotes-one which also referred to the dedication of a monument to Joseph Standing in 1952 by David O. McKay. I noted most of these sources, and checked out a few, including the Comprehensive History of the Church by B. H. Roberts, which contained ten pages on both accounts. Next, I moved into the Deseret News online archives, where I noted information on the 1974 Texas murders, and saw that one article mentioned a forthcoming book, which I found and checked out. It was written by a lawyer involved in the proceedings, and is copyrighted 2000. I've also researched the accounts in the Deseret News and Church News concerning the martyrdoms in Bolivia and Peru from 1989-1991, and on Jose Mackintosh. From this, I can see the need to focus and categorize the information. As of yet, I haven't even been able to discover the identity of the other missionaries that have been killed. I also notice that much more research has been done on the Joseph Standing and Tennessee murders than on the more recent ones. There's still a lot of work to do.
